Just ripped through The Poppy War by R F Kuang. It's the kind of writing that disappears behind the story (read: successful crafting), and makes you want to read read read to find out what happens. Very grim look at the atrocities of war embedded in a historical Chinese fantasy setting.

I propose we only ever set the clocks back, never forward, rendering clock time increasingly meaningless in terms of day-night cycle, until on the eighth year of the experiment, clock time is abolished completely. Thus we attain Utopia.*

Holy Days, the movie based on the Joy Crowley book, makes a pretty good sick-day watch. It's a bit clumsy in spots. Plotwise, has similarities with The Mountain, though less focalised through the kid perspective. Also elicits Call the Midwife, though less of a Serious Drama. Fun overall, though.

I rarely drink these days, but I thought I'd treat myself to a bottle of red. So of course I dropped it. Unopened. Bottle smashed to shards, wine across the floor. I had to move the fridge to get it all up. Insult to injury, my dinner turned to charcoal in the oven as I cleaned 🤦

Lately I've been hitting a Friday evening restlessness, where I want social time but my brain is too fried to go to the poetry circle at the library, my physical energy is low, and bars are too loud. So I end up sitting at home with a movie. Pretty unsatisfying.

What a great idea. So many grants exclude essential costs associated with running a charity, a project or whatever. I think overheads are seen as taking away from the cause, rather than an essential component of taking action.

Design matters. Paint on left is lovely, dearer than paint on right. Unfortunately it has a fussy small cap that’s hard to put on. Other paint has a screw cap too, but with a little flip bit so if you struggle with fiddly things you can still open & close the tube. Small detail, big difference.
Two open paint tubes. The one on the left has pale yellow paint and a black screw on lid. The one on the right has mossy green paint and a flip-open lid.
