Today in Canada we observe Truth and Reconciliation Day in Canada, also known as Orange Shirt Day to honour the Indigenous victims and survivors of residential schools and their families. It’s a good day to read the TRC list of 94 calls to action and think about progress we still need to make.

Dismayed to hear some folks urging publishers to run submissions through Pangram to keep AI out of their magazines. I put no faith in any piece of AI software, with its in-built biases. Beware the witch hunt. Most tales of supposed AI plagiarism I’ve heard of have been against writers of colour.

Lucille Clifton

MISS ROSIE

when i watch you
wrapped up like garbage
sitting, surrounded by the smell
of too old potato peels
or
when i watch you
in your old man's shoes
with the little toe cut out
sitting, waiting for your mind
like next week's grocery
i say
when i watch you
you wet brown bag of a woman
who used to be the best looking gal in georgia
used to be called the Georgia Rose
i stand up
through your destruction
i stand up

Another poem from Diane Seuss, which just makes me cry and cry 🐦‍⬛
ROMANTIC POET
You would not have loved him,
my friend the scholar
decried. He brushed his teeth,
if at all, with salt. He lied,
and rarely
washed his hair. Wiped his ass
with leaves or with his hand.
The top of his head would have barely
reached your tits. His pits
reeked, as did his deathbed.

But the nightingale, I said.
