Haha, yes! More than once I have been asked to read a Canadian city name out loud in a meeting.

(To be fair, it's likely how I would have sounded out Dunedin before I moved here)

Oh hilarious. I'm listening to a podcast and they happen to be talking about the Dunedin Pace of Aging research. If I hadn't recently been looking at that myself, I'm not sure I would have recognised the word they're pronouncing as Dunedin 😂

Besides recognising his face as an actor, I didn't know anything about Martin Mull—but the documentary about him is really poignant and fun. His self-description as a painter who happened to make a living in entertainment really resonated with me, a poet who happens to scrabble together a living.

Great question. Rent is 43% of my weekly pay as a single professional in Dunedin...and I'd say I really lucked out with this unit at a reasonable price.

Rewatching Den-noh Coil, an anime I first watched nearly 20 yrs ago about kids with AR glasses, and what adults can't and don't see. Gosh it holds up so far. Nice animation, good pacing, and great characterisation. I love the granny with programming skills selling black market code to the kids.

What helped me most was getting one of those old school boil and bite mouthguards, and lying down with it in for 10-20 min daily (I do a meditation or listen to an audiobook). It gently separates your teeth a bit without you having to think about it, which can help the muscles relax.

Have you read any of Nghi Vo's Singing Hills books (folkloric fantasy)? Or Becky Chambers (cosy sci fi)? Or for something completely different, the Muderbot books? Novellas are sometimes a nice way to ease in, and these are all series so there's more to dig into.

I kind of love that you've done it this way. I hate how everything requires reference letters, that I have to ask multiple additional people to contribute effort to an application with no ability to assess my odds ahead of time.

The problem with reading a James S. A. Corey novel is that at some point you need to put it down to do sensible things like going to bed, and that seems unfair.
The book "The Mercy of the Gods" by James S. A. Corey rests on my lap.

Aren't the colour variations gorgeous? The design and production is so clever, it's a pretty incredible collaborative achievement. Plus, it was kind of hilarious watching folks at the Ōtepoti launch (myself included) take a copy, then change their mind and swap for a different colour...

A lot of this is ground that been trod before, but solid storytelling and characterisation made it bingeable. Thought some of the soundtrack choices were great (🎵Om—reverse the hack🎵). Bit bored by the avatar fight scenes, but overall thought Pantheon came together as a whole pretty successfully.

Thought the show did a good job with presenting shades from questionable ethics through to obviously evil. Situations with no good choices. Nature vs nurture, free will, big emotions leading to bad choices, etc. etc.

Watched the animated show Pantheon. Very much liked the way it played with access to information and perspective. I've always been interested by uploaded human intelligence/what is consciousness/digital reality stories, and especially how that relates to power and access.

Nicky Hager, Dirty Work, p. 37 #NZpol
It is unfair and needlessly cynical to think that those in positions of power are all untrustworthy and unethical. Most people, whatever we think of their political beliefs, share some basic values of our society, such as fairness and honesty, and they are reasonably decent. But it takes relatively few people to cause many of the world's problems. Rather than being disillusioned and pessimistic generally about humanity, it is more accurate to understand that some people cause vastly more than their share of trouble and harm. The rest of us have no choice but to deal with the results.
