Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.

my wife has a friend who sent Dolly Parton a painting she made & a letter explaining how much Dolly's music meant to her while she was transitioning. Dolly responded to it personally & paid for her top surgery. Sounds like an urban legend but it's real. I think we're going to more stories like this.

"Cover for Marianna Ritchey's new book, Academic Practice for the End of the World: Music, Musicology, and Political Change.
A graphic that resembles an open notebook.

Words: Author: Marianna Ritchey
Title: Academic Practice for the End of the World
Series: Music/Culture
In a few words: Combining rigorous critique with an anarchist commitment to turning theory into practice, this work insists that deep critique and a materialist understanding of history can serve as future-oriented forces shaping present political actions. This work thus offers both diagnosis and possibility, in that it is aimed at helping scholars take some of the tools the academy
has bestowed, and put them to
use against colonial racial
capitalism.
About the author: MARIANNA RITCHEY is associate professor of Music History at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and author of Composing Capital: Classical Music in the Neoliberal Era (2019).
A small gray sticky note taped to the bottom left corner of the graphic: A deep and hopeful critique of and from within musicology. "

My new book is on the horizon! It's about learning to desire the end of the world that liberal idealism has built, which I think is particularly hard for academics and maybe musicologists most of all

today's excerpt from eighteenth-century singing school discourse: is learning to sing "by rule" or "by note" unholy because it's popular with young people? (Thomas Symmes, The Reasonableness of Regular Singing, or Singing by Note, 1720)
Q. 4. IS this of any weight against Singing by Note, to say, It cannot be a good Way, because a considerable Number of People readily comply with it; and that if it was a good Way, it would not be so readily embraced, especially by Young People? Was it any Argument against the Doctrine of the Gospel, that it had such a speedy Admission and Acceptation? Was not the Reformation from Popery attended with great Success? Is it not more Rational to say, GOD wonderfully own'd and succeeded these Reformations? And who need and are more likely to learn than Young People? Q. 5. SUPPOSE some Young People are too light, profane and airy while they are learning the Tunes, is that a sufficient Plea against Singing by Note? If any should be so in Learning the Vulgar Way, would that, in your Opinion be a sufficient Reason for its Condemnation? Too many People shamefully profane and abuse the Sacred Scriptures, is that a sufficient Reason for the not Learning them? But have you not a wrong Notion of Psalm Tunes? Don't you look upon them as Sacred, that they are in themselves holy...

Definitely 1840s clickbait, but this came up in my research on choristers. [Hampshire Gazette, August 7, 1849, 4]
newsclipping reading as follows: "HARD TO 'TAKE'. – An aged minister was officiating for the first time at a public service of a congregation who had been accustomed to having the 'hymns lined,' as it is termed. The venerable old man could not see distinctly, and designed to dispense with singing. To announce his purpose he arose and said ––
'My eyes are dim I cannot see,' ––
and immediately the chorister commenced singing the line to the tune of 'Old Hundred.' Surprise and mortification rendered the minister almost speechless, but he managed to stammer out ––
'I meant but an apology.'
This line was immediately sung by the congregation, and the minister, now quite excited, exclaimed ––
'Forb ar, I pray –– my sight is dim."
but the singing proceeded, and the couplet was finished by his troubled and beseeching explanation ––
'I do not mean to read a hymn.'
Strange as it may seem, this was also sung with much energy, and the worthy old gentleman sat down in despair. –– Southern Literary Gazette.
