Important thread 👇 The relationship between direct democracy and the fare right is much more nuanced than de Weck's article suggests. Political institutions hardly ever have unambiguous effects, given their mediating role between various individual and societal factors and policy outcomes.

Does POTUS know that the lake he renamed "Lake America" is the smallest of the Great Lakes? Such a weak move - I would have renamed Lake Superior "Lake America Superior"...just saying.

Two map graphs show the state of liberal democracy according to the V-Dem Liberal Democracy index for 2025 and 2024. The higher the score (or darker blue), the more democratic the country. Lower scores (or dark red) mean less democratic. While North and South America, Western Europe and Oceania are mostly in the blue, most parts of Asia and Africa are in the red in 2025.
In comparison to the map for 2024, the map graph for 2025 shows democratic backsliding in some traditionally stable democracies in Western Europe and North America, in particular the USA, United Kingdom and Italy.

@robfordmancs.bsky.social argues that the unpopularity of Reform's proposals offer the government an opportunity - but I'd add that they will squander that if they introduce what just looks like a watered-down version of those proposals.
y pushing for such a hardline policy, Reform may have over-reached and handed a powerful weapon to their political opponents, who can attack a potential Farage government as a clear and present danger to the rights and security hundreds of thousands of decent hard-working migrant families, including friends, neighbours and workmates. After years of making the running on immigration, Farage may this week have handed the initiative back to his opponents.
