Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has called the vandalism of several statues in Parliament Square, including one of women's votes campaigner Dame Millicent Fawcett, "disgraceful".

Ch Supt Stuart Bell, who was leading the policing operation for the protest, said: "It is very disappointing to see damage to seven statues and property in the vicinity of the protest today.
"We support the public's right to protest but criminality like this is completely unacceptable."
A spokesperson for Women and Equalities Minister Bridget Phillipson, speaking on the damage to Dame Millicent's statue, said she "utterly condemns the appalling defacement of such an important national monument to the fight for women's rights"
"There is no excuse for this disgraceful criminal damage."
The Met confirmed it is also dealing with a number of complaints from the public about signs and images shared on social media that were reportedly displayed at the protest yesterday and "action will be taken if there are signs displayed that breach of the law"

When the NHS talk about “concerns regarding referral appropriateness” they mean they want cis people to have more control over our bodies. But I take the much simpler stance that if someone wants to change sex that’s their business. Like abortion or fertility help it should be fast and on demand.

Well, this was inevitable. Forstater is now using her own case to argue that racism should/is protected as a philosophical belief 🤮

"Even comments which are “serious, severely hurtful and
prejudicial”are covered by Article 10 of the European Convention on Human rights (freedom of expression) which doesn't mean absolute freedom of expression in a situations, but employers should treat beliefs equally.

As the judge said in my case even beliefs that are profoundly distressing and offensive to many others are beliefs that must be tolerated in a pluralist society."

"Cofnas's hereditarian belief has already been found to be "worthy of respect in a democratic society" by a court in the UK.

Though not binding in Belgium, but its anti-discrimination law is based on the same principle.

Still it's better to have a good job than a good legal case.

Ghent uni could string out the suspension - the process is the punishment.

If there are calls for a staff member to be discriminated against because of their beliefs the answer should be No (unless the belief falls below the v low threshold for belief discrimination), not "oh well if 2000 people object..."

Dear Professor Petra De Sutter,
As academics, we are concerned that Ghent University's disciplinary proceedings against Dr Conas appear to constitute retaliation, at least in part, for publicizing academic misconduct that occurred in British universities.
An essential component of academic freedom is the ability to scrutinize the scholarship of other academics, regardless of their position or status. This must include the freedom to provide evidence of academic misconduct, such as plagiarism and fabrication. The pursuit of truth depends on rigorous self-policing by academics.
We are also concerned that the University appears to be treating threats to academic freedom, whether from its own staff claiming distress or from external actors announcing boycotts, as grounds for disciplining the very individual targeted by those threats.
Therefore we urge Ghent University to protect Dr Conas from being punished for exercising his academic freedom.
