#TilesOnTuesday took this one in Leeds Museum on the weekend. I know it's meant to be all impressive and ancient but honestly it just gives me the giggles. Hope it makes you smile too! 😁
The wolf and twins mosaic, Roman, from Aldborpugh North Yorkshire, 300 - 400 AD. Depicts a black wolf smiling somewhat maniacally (hence giving me the giggles), with small figures of Romulus and Remus underneath, a tree, and diamond patterns around the border. Tan, brown, white and black tiles are used.

Rakan at the Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple, Kyoto, Japan. Photographer John Paul Foster.
the tightly framed, vertical composition immerses the viewer in a sea of stone faces, illustrating a spectacular example of contemporary Buddhist devotion interacting with the natural world. These statues represent the Arhats—the enlightened disciples of the Buddha—and were carved by hundreds of different amateurs under the guidance of sculptor-monk Kocho Nishimura during the temple's late-twentieth-century restoration, resulting in a marvelous diversity of human expressions.

The photograph utilizes a shallow depth of field, bringing the immediate foreground statues into crisp, tactile focus while allowing the figures in the upper registers to gently recede into a soft, textured blur. Each figure is sculpted from porous volcanic stone, carved with highly individualized, expressive features that range from serene meditation and blissful smiling to gentle whimsy. The dominant figure in the absolute foreground is depicted with smooth, rounded cheeks, large stylized ears, and an open, whistling or chanting mouth. Behind it, another disciple is captured with closed eyes and hands clasped together in a peaceful prayer posture (anjali mudra), surrounded by a sea of companion faces that peer out at various angles.

What elevates the visual poetry of the scene is the vibrant, organic patina of bright green moss that blankets the stone. The moss patches follow the contours of the sculptures, draping over the crowns of their heads like velvet caps and settling into the deep, chiseled crevices of their eyes, brows, and hands. This vivid, living greenery provides a striking color contrast to the cool, earthy grey tones of the weathered stone, perfectly embodying the classical aesthetic of wabi-sabi—the beauty found in impermanence, age, and nature's quiet reclamation.

Good morning ☕☀️ Fading into the green; features erased by the hand of time. #AlphabetChallenge #WeekAForAbandoned
A weathered stone bust of a man with a mustache and shoulder-length hair, partially overgrown by lush green and variegated ivy. The statue's facial features are heavily eroded and textured from age. Dark, dense foliage forms a moody, shadowed background, making the stone head stand out.

A bunny stands on a bunch of rocks by the seashore, perhaps stones in some ancient ruin. They gesture at a small cat made of water, who is perched on a rock with the moon at their back. The water cat glows slightly from the moonlight

social media that's bad for minors is obviously bad for adults too. crazy to me that the move seems to be to just accept that and ban minors rather than regulate the obvious design patterns that were put in there on purpose which make it harmful to its users
