Of course, this pitch sounds very different when the median voter is conveniently imagining that, since you said 5 contradictory things you might do, you'll do the things they like and not the stuff they don't like, as opposed to when you're the actual president and you keep doing things they HATE.

a big reason (though not the only one) that so many elite institutions capitulated to Trump immediately in early 2025 is they had learned through long experience that Dems are too chickenshit to punish them for basically any reason. but things can change!

Republicans traded in a sturdy, high turnout coalition for an extremely fickle, low turnout one that can only be assembled by one guy that also somehow doesnt have downballot benefits even when hes on the ballot—& now that one guy will never be on the ballot again. Good luck with that going forward.

I wonder if this is also the answer to the judge question. Did they run this thing through an immigration court with friendlier terms for the warrant-seeking prosecutors because it was very clear they would get nowhere with the regular judiciary?

Though, cards on the table, in my ideal world we would have shifted those interceptor stocks and then told Ukraine to absolutely keep blowing the crap out of Russian oil infrastructure until every last Russian soldier was either off Ukrainian soil or buried in it.

Let me try this: Maybe Trump campaigning, stealing from taxpayers to put out ads, and trying to bribe voters; Vance begging people to give them more of a chance; and Republicans spending big in TX, KS, SC, etc. is because they *don’t* have a good plan to overturn electoral loss, not because they do.

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

My wife and I have an open marriage and are trying to conceive, and one of the established rules is that when she's in later stage pregnancy or we have a baby, I'm expected to cut that shit out to focus on fatherhood (this is a great rule that I enthusiastically agreed to).

You could replace Biden with anyone you can think of and they aren’t going to be able to fundamentally restructure the judiciary with the narrowest legislative majority in American history. Biden would have preferred larger majorities! He’s a New Deal guy!

Doing 2 fantasy leagues for the first time in my life. Winning in one, getting killed in the other, no money on the line, drafted on a small but non-zero amount of research. It's been really fun, tbh.

Increasingly convinced that like 80% of issues map onto one axis: Mom vs Drunk Uncle. HR Ladies? Moms. Founders? Drunk Uncles. Wine Aunts are Moms, despite the alcohol, while Alpha Male Abstainers are Drunk Uncles despite pretending to believe in moderation/self control.

I have a successful open marriage. It's very boring. There's a lot of managing expectations and consent, being clear in communications with my wife and any outside partners, keeping everyone on the same page. Which is HR lady shit, and therefore not as cool as the "drunk uncle open marriage".

It seems clear a bunch of the world is planning on 2 and scrambling for as much alternative capacity as possible before we hit the wall, while the US believes that acknowledging the wall at all is woke and gay.

Trump's power was always in the *potential* of his ultra-businessman presidency, more specifically in how it allowed him to promise mutually contradictory things with no push back, since the media will gladly push back on Dems who pointed out it was fantastical. No more potential for great wealth.

What's wild is that this usually happens the other way, i.e., more people remember voting for the winner of the election than actually did. The only way people are reversing that trend is if they've determined the loser stench on Trump II is THAT bad.

I probably listen to significantly more AI music than the average person, but that's because a lot of AI music is the perfect thing to put on while digging through code and spreadsheets specifically because it's reached a middle point where the mechanics are solid but the emotional valence is low.

I'm not sure this is necessarily at odds with what he posted, though? The overall point still stands; net new private investment is declining at a disproportionate rate to how much data center investment is increasing. The causual links can be debated, sure, but the overall trend is the same.

In practice though, it really seems like we're moving towards, "AI is a productivity tool that enhances the employee you have, but often doesn't really let you replace them, so much as get more out of them, in some fields. In others, it's mostly useless so far."

We could, of course, get the weird version where some viziers, like Miller, are fully committed to the Cool Zone because they think (probably rightly) they're f***ed if Dems get control of Congress, but most viziers are incredibly uncommitted to the attempt so it flounders.

Yeah, everyone wasn't going to go back to the old world without a fight, because there are too many advantages to not being like Trump/US right now, which is also why Trump is going to get obliterated in the midterms as even the short-term costs prove politically insurmountable.

“The base” means core voters, not those furthest from center who denounce the party and say don’t vote. Every sign says the Democratic base is very energized: party registration, likely voter screens, primary and special election turnout, generic ballot, which states are competitive, you name it.

I'm not willing to say he's permanently ended the US comparative advantage in either, especially given how bad the rest of the world is regarding sentiments towards immigrants, but the idea he's at least created the opening for longer term damage is certainly plausible.

Plaidula @plaidula.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
The big caveats here are basically to what extent Trump II has permanently undermined the US ability to 1) draw immigrants from just about everywhere (capping future human capital growth) and 2) draw foreign investment (capping savings/investment capital growth).

I'm probably more pessimistic than you are about our status as an immigration haven after this Admin, but our real competitors for top talent are going to be places like Europe, Japan, etc (requires them to stop hating immigration so much, which is a very large lift) or staying in place.

Honestly, this is also part of Trump's reelection. A bunch of people wanted President Business to make it 2019 again, because while Trump was President during the actual start of COVID, Biden had to be President during a bunch of the period where people were, at some level, emotionally reckoning.
