We ought to be worried now: "we are all doing what those with aging relatives do: watching the signs of increasing mental and physical infirmity, asking what’s normal and what might require intervention, and wondering when we ought to be worried."

What if we covered Trump's age the way we covered Biden's?
His rapid decline is obvious. Why not give it the attention it deserves?

Today’s insanity included me shepherding players during a fire alarm at the rink, minutes before the graduation ceremony for the 2011 birth year players. Followed by a nail biting overtime where we held off a tie against a team to which we had lost dramatically three times this season.

It's actually a good thing that previously apolitical normies are finally getting angry and starting to speak out. We need the numbers in the streets and at the polls. If your response to them is "no, fuck you, too late," then you don't actually care about stopping Trump. You're just preening.

This is bad
The research found that if carbon emissions continued to rise, 70% of the model runs led to collapse, while an intermediate level of emissions resulted in collapse in 37% of the models. Even in the case of low future emissions, an Amoc shutdown happened in 25% of the models.

Scientists have warned previously that Amoc collapse must be avoided “at all costs”. It would shift the tropical rainfall belt on which many millions of people rely to grow their food, plunge western Europe into extreme cold winters and summer droughts, and add 50cm to already rising sea levels.

I like that the NYT story on Mamdani's college application is sparking dialogue on how race is a political expression. ~100 years ago, Minnesota expelled Finnish labor organizers by declaring them Asian and Alabama let a Black man marry a Sicilian woman because Italians weren't "White."

We're also going to find out that RFE/RL, USAID and the rest of the American soft-power apparatus was also load-bearing. It turns out a radio station is a lot cheaper than if you have to intervene to fight a war or control refugee flows. A *lot* of this stuff is load-bearing.

No One Knows If Decades-Old Nukes Would Actually Work
Atomic weapons are highly complex, surprisingly sensitive, and often pretty old. With testing banned, countries have to rely on good maintenance and simulations to trust their weapons work.

University leaders need to understand: they are holding INCREDIBLY good cards. It is so rare in today's polarized era to have the support of 70+ percent of the public against the Trump admiministration on anything. Universities have that—AND winning legal arguments.
Graphic of Washington Post poll from April 18-22, 2025, showing "Majorities of Americans oppose various Trump proposals"

highlighting two lines in particular:
"Increasing the Federal Government's role in how private universities operate" - 28 percent support, 70 percent oppose
"Reducing federal funding for medical research" - 21 percent support, 77 percent oppose
