There is absolutely no viable path forward for this country that doesn’t hinge on extreme accountability for everyone involved in this administration. They’re going to whine about politicization and credulous media types will echo them, but the thing is, they’ve committed tons of obvious crimes!

lol, I’m replying in between sets at the Y. This isn’t a debate club, dude. You started tweeting at me and are angry I’m not doing more research before replying?

I feel like you’re not grasping what is meant by “throwaway” if you’re now angry I hadn’t fully thought through every potential counter argument.

Not saying that’s wrong. Again, just saying the way Bill originally framed it isn’t terribly useful in deciding whether he’s good or not. Really thought this was kind of a throwaway comment, just saying “I’d use a different sample”, not even saying Bill’s conclusion was wrong

E.g., having lost these games by more would help his record in close games but obviously be worse, etc.

pkington.bsky.social @pkington.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Yeah, I don’t disagree with that really. My issue is really framing the sample as games decided by less than ten since it excludes a lot of relevant games and that focusing on result isn't great at telling us whether they coached well.

pkington.bsky.social @pkington.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
But to actually answer your questions, evaluating coaches on process rather than outcome is legitimately crucial if you want to make the right decisions, and that’s true of any sport. Again, not saying Day is perfect or anything, just that this framing isn‘t useful in determining how good he is

This is a weird way to react to someone telling someone else they don’t think the way they’re framing a question is useful

I feel like having been a coach for my living for the past 22 years and succeeding at the highest level my sport has available should actually give me some credibility when discussing how coaches are best evaluated

The distinction exists to show that you can’t be super confident it’s actually the best performance ever because it may just be due to a significant tailwind, etc.

Sorry I’m not one of the cool computer kids. It has been less than three weeks since I coached multiple athletes to world championships who both set new worlds best times. It’s not football, but I know a *little* bit about how to judge what matters to athletic performance.

pkington.bsky.social @pkington.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Like, if he’d won every game decided by ten or less, they’d be in their fourth consecutive season without a loss. Doesn’t seem like a realistic bar or one that helps one figure out if he’s good.
000
pkington.bsky.social @pkington.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
TBC, I’m not trying to say Day coached a great game. I’m saying using the parameters of only games within 10 points is silly. Takes the #1 team to the woodshed in the rose bowl, doesn’t show he can win close games. Never gets blown out, so any time he doesn’t go undefeated involved losing close game

pkington.bsky.social @pkington.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
I have a hard time figuring out the scenario in which it would’ve mattered really. They’re going to use the timeout at some point on that series, and it’s still not going to be enough to leave a meaningful amount of time on the clock no matter when they use it.
100
pkington.bsky.social @pkington.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
That because a defender’s helmet came off and there would’ve been a runoff if they hadn’t used the timeout, which likely would’ve been worse

What is the point of being an analytics guy who refuses to make process/outcome distinctions when evaluating performance?
230
pkington.bsky.social @pkington.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
I think every coach would probably say they coached worse in the games they lose vs those they win? This seems like you’re just “resulting.” Did Day manage the game worse because Sayin missed a TD to McCuin or a kicker missed a fg?

pkington.bsky.social @pkington.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
This framing basically penalizes him for having beaten some great teams by more than ten though. He hasn’t lost a game by more than ten since 2023. This is the same as saying “they win lots of games and are very close in all of their losses.”

Let’s not lose sight of the fact that this ongoing political humiliation and national embarrassment, which now entails Times exposés, political arrests of blameless citizens, and inter-agency warfare, entirely stems from Trump’s bizarre and pointless desire to paint the Reflecting Pool bright blue.
