Finally catching up on logging my #piratereadingclub books. Don't judge 😂 #5 - What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher I was really excited to find out that the Sworn Soldier books existed, I thought it was just "What Moves the Dead," which I read awhile ago.

#6 - What Stalks the Deep by T. Kingfisher I am obsessed with this book. The combination of horror and absurdity and folklore was just perfect. Without giving anything away, the new character introduced was so ridiculously good and strange, I didn't want the story to end.

#7 - Rabbits by Terry Miles This is the September book for my book club, and I am very excited to finally go to a meeting with a book I enjoyed. This was a very fun and weird adventure with several twists I didn't see coming because of how skillfully I was pulled into K's experience.

Some queer academia for what is probably my last @piratereadingclub.bsky.social entry for this year + my library cards (the British Library one is a flex, I have not once used their reading rooms despite my best intentions)
The book blank canvas by Grace Murray. The cover is a white woman with her back turned to the camera, holding her hair in one hand. Poking out the book are thee library cards, one says My Library, one says British Library one the other says Student.

finished a book for the first time in years: “Never Whistle at Night”, an indigenous dark fiction anthology! really loved all of the stories, so many of them stick with you for days after. I think my favorite story is either “The Prepper” by Morgan Talty or “Dead Owls” by Mona Susan Power :]

Book 2: "Captain's Dinner" by Adam Cohen. About the wreck of the Mignonette, which is known as the case that put an end to the tacit condoning of "the custom of the sea". Delves heavily into the legal and ethical battle and how it related to Victorian reforms to protect the vulnerable. Great book!
Book cover of Captain's Dinner: a Shipwreck, an Act of Cannibalism, and a Murder Trial that Changed Legal History, by Adam Cohen. The cover shows the Mignonette lifeboat with four men lost in a stormy sea.

Book 3: "Moby-Dick" by Herman Melville. I've been chipping away at this (as part of a book club) since December and finally finished! It is a really weird and idiosyncratic book, in a good way. Also unexpectedly funny at times! And gay. People are not joking about that.
The book "Moby-Dick" by Herman Melville. The cover shows a ship and a whaleboat, with a white whale leaping over the water.

Book 4: "In the Heart of the Sea: the Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex" by Nathaniel Philbrick. Perhaps the quintessential true story of shipwreck and cannibalism at sea. The concept of a vengeful whale inspired Melville to write Moby Dick. Tore through this one! It makes me want to visit Nantucket.

Book 6: "Pseudotooth" by Verity Holloway. Dreamy portal fantasy that blurs realities, with distinct and unique characters. Themes of illness/disability, trauma, and memory. The kind of lush and vivid sensory descriptions that I love in fiction. Highly recommended!
The book "Pseudotooth" by Verity Holloway. The cover shows a teenage girl with reddish-blonde hair and sad eyes, with a tooth floating between her hands. Water with fish swimming beneath the surface is superimposed over the lower half of her face.

Book 5: "The Sea Captain's Wife" by Tilar J. Mazzeo. The true story of Mary Ann Patten, who taught herself navigation and medicine on her husband Joshua's clipper. At 19 & pregnant she successfully navigated around Cape Horn in his stead when he fell ill. A heroine of her day, now largely forgotten.
Book "The Sea Captain's Wife" by Tilar J. Mazzeo. It shows a black white portrait of Mary Ann Patten in the silhouette of a sextant, and a clipper ship sailing through icebergs.

An excellent mail day, thanks to @twolinespress.com. Especially loved this part of the included letter: “This book is exactly the kind of work that we love producing and the kind of work that makes us proud to lose our NEA funding.” Hell yeah.
A photo of a sticker that reads, “READ TRANS POETS”; a copy of Splendor: Trans Poets (translated from various languages); and a letter that reads:

Dear reader,

We could not be more pleased to share our newest book in the Calico series, Splendor: Trans Poets.

Or rather, I am pleased that you, our members, could share this with all of us. This book is exactly the kind of work that we love producing and the kind of work that makes us proud to lose our NEA funding. Thank you for allowing us to continue our work.

Splendor is not meant to be exhaustive, but rather to give a select group of authors the space to showcase the breadth of their work. To give authors a chance to truly speak. Thank you for making this space.

@piratereadingclub.bsky.social I saw this in a book shop a few years ago and 100% judged a book by its cover and boy did it deliver! What a stupid treat. Wasn't really there for the main het romance or character growth (though some lesbians did briefly frot) just enjoyed the campy ride!

This might sound like a joke but I’m serious. Unless you have to read something for work or school, it’s fine to put it down if it’s not working for you after, say, 50 pages. I think as long as you know a classic’s influence and how it slots into the literary landscape, you’re good.
