Tom Cruise was unrecognizable in this! What a performance!
A movie poster for the film "Digger," showing three big heads at the top (one smiling kid, one smiling older woman, one grimacing older man) and at the bottom two different-sized boys walking toward a huge sun, which is I think a symbol for climate change.

Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

Which version of modern punditry do you prefer: "This thing I do is [secretly] the cheat code for everything" OR "This thing most other people do is [secretly] misguided hogwash"?

Join us at Hamline University for a conversation between Deb Olin Unferth and Patrick Cottrell, on Thursday, October 1st, from 7-9pm in Sundin Hall. You can find an overview and registration info at www.hamline.edu/vane. FREE and open to all--please share broadly!
The cover of Deb Olin Unferth's wonderful novel, _Earth 7_, which depicts the Earth floating in a big blue space, with a lifeline drawn from the world around the moon and out to a spaceship, zipping elsewhere through the text of the title. The cover of Patrick Cottrell's wonderful novel, _The Afternoon Hours of a Hermit_, with a photo of the author laid over the image of a fingerprint's whorls, in the shape of an apple, with a small fuzzy black caterpillar near the apple's stem. There is text announcing "Hamline Homecoming Happy Hour" at The Black Hart, on Friday October 2, from 5-7pm.

Same. Access to the broad horizons at the public library opened up my world when "age appropriate" work at school left me cold. (Finding Stephen King when I was 9 made me, eventually, an English major & then teacher; King was my gateway drug to Roth, Morrison, Vonnegut in my early teens...)

I still carry some concerns about Minneapolis' speeding camera program, but early results from the city's pilot program are promising. As of last week, 44% fewer folks going 10+ mph over, and 74% fewer going 20+. www.minneapolismn.gov/media/-www-c...
Speeding continues to be significantly lower at camera locations
For the first six months of 2026, average speeding at 10+ mph over the speed limit was down 42% at camera locations compared to the
launch month in October 2025. This means there were nearly 70,000 fewer drivers speeding at all the camera locations in the first half of
2026. Speeding at 20+ mph over the limit was down 69%, which means about 8,000 fewer drivers at this speed in the first half of 2026. There
has been less speeding at every camera location (details next page).

The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/
