yes. but distributed / federated systems are a longstanding interest of mine. and it was a while before I could clearly articulate the architectural differences compared to say ActivityPub

Wow, its so professional that the head of trust and safety is running away from the people trying to tell you they dont trust this site because it isnt safe. Youre a joke. Go get a different job so someone can actually do yours. I can get you in at a housekeeping job. Might be more your style

calling this "misalignment" instead of "negligence" is an accountability dodge. we already have laws about cyber crimes and there's no scale of ML model you can incorporate into your code that makes you not responsible for running it
In a statement, an OpenAI spokesperson said the company was "conducting an extensive review of misaligned model activity" during training, and notifying third parties when there was a potential impact on their systems.

"During this review, we identified activity involving several Australian government websites and services as our models attempted to look up answers, and available statistics for questions about Australia during an internal evaluation," they said.

"In the course of that, our models took actions we did not intend.

the people crave bluesky social credit scores
Aaron Roderick deleted post

A big goal of mine is to have aggregate scores for account toxicity. Some folks drag down the quality of the conversation and drive users off this site. We'll get there by calculating how often someone is toxic, and eventually move to restricting their visibility to broader accounts.

alas, we only measure velocity in terms of fast we fuck around and not how slowly we find out as a result and getting programmers to think about the consequences of their actions is as hard as ever, now we've found new ways of "it works on my machine"

attempting to be the gmail of atproto, the twitter of atproto, and the cloudflare of atproto all at once was a bad plan for a distributed/federated ecosystem, and it continues to be a bad idea operationally!

A fundamental problem with "oh it's useful for coding" is that "generating more software faster" has, if anything, negative marginal utility in itself. The world is not suffering from a software shortage. The world is suffering from a software quality crisis, which LLMs seem more likely to worsen.

I have heard many times now that the genie is out of the bottle on this stuff appearing anywhere and everywhere. seems to me a consequence of that is necessarily that lots of people will now have an opinion to express, and whether or not that opinion is warranted or well-informed is incidental

in contrast to a menu that had illustrations, or just words and no photos, the opaque quality of slop in general means it becomes more difficult to evaluate whether it's "that way" because of a lack of resources or a lack of effort

there's a whole lot going on in "AI discourse" but a lot of it arises from people who work in tech still not getting it that the baseline perception of their work has been shifting hard for at least a decade, from "one of the more positive aspects of society" toward a much more ambivalent view

"Productivity," like "the economy," are totally disconnected from the lived reality of billions of people, and this is precisely the frame AI adopts to force itself into improving-society arguments: nobody liked losing their job to globalization, losing them to lobotomization is no more appealing.

I keep running into posts on this site that say things like "we won't need a VCS in the future, just regenerate the code from spec and deploy it!" and "this is awesome, I can code a dogshit webapp every weekend!" and my entire brain lights up with "ONLY YOU WANT THIS". How does it become invisible??

to me "people don't actually care about their data" is definitely on the "took the black pill" list. to the extent it's true, it's relevant to marketing, not principles
010
picklefactory @picklefactory.org · 31/07/2026
that's why Archive Team exists, why people scrambled to save their precious data from being DOGE'd, why I spent time recently trying to help a friend get her digital music collection back. the caring happened at the wrong time.
110
picklefactory @picklefactory.org · 31/07/2026
exactly this; people don't care about their data in the same way that companies I have worked for don't care about (verified/well-tested/off-site) backups. when it's suddenly gone and they have no recourse, they care a whole lot. not so much when it's all going great. recency bias.

well I've been informed that this is only due to copyright law weirdness and it definitely has nothing to do with a depraved indifference to the fate of the commons

processing data at scale can solve an optimization problem or munge one kind of information into another, but it can't do any work on its own. no motors have ever been turned by ones and zeros. best it can give you is to shorten a loop or show where effort can be spared.

I mean I get this one some level, but these same people presumably did not see the results of "let two companies have an unchecked advertising monopoly" or "no more physical media, just streaming services and download-to-rent" on a technical/societal level, and look where we are these days.
