Researchers discovered ultrafast magnetoelectric coupling in rare-earth iron garnets — a finding that may enable sub-100-nm THz magneto-optical readout for faster magnetic data storage and information processing. Read the Letter: go.aps.org/4jdLtQy
A figure displaying two models of the atomic and magnetic structure of HoIG under scenarios of above TM (left) and below TM (right). The structures consist of lattices and fields of various molecules, including Ho3+ (purple spheres), Fe3+tet (pink spheres), Fe3+oct (yellow spheres), and O2- (red dots). The left model displays the molecules arranged within a black outline of a cube, and includes several pink, purple, and yellow tetrahedrons in the middle. The right model displays the same molecules in a more compressed rectangular sphere, with dark and light purple arrows indicating canting angles from the ⟨111⟩-axis.

This chud approach to everything makes me mad as a hornet. So much of our world is designed and built by people who care about what they're doing and what it means. Being sloppy and aloof makes things suck. You don't want that in your ejection seats. "Tough guys" are a liability.

the true moral of this nasa story is this: if you present anything as a choice to management, be it testing or other safety critical work, they will see it as optional, and will default to saying no doing anything more than the minimum best practice means taking more responsibilities for delays
She asked the powers at NASA to let her add a safeguard to prevent that error in a real flight, and they laughed it off as too unlikely. But they let her make a note of it. When an astronaut did make that blooper during the Apollo 8 mission—the first manned flight orbiting the moon—it caused necessary navigational data to vanish, and they called Hamilton in to get it back. “I remember saying to a couple of guys there, ‘It’s the Lauren bug!’” she says, laughing.

A diagram of the Fulton Recovery System, a device that uses an aircraft to snare a rope held aloft by a balloon to rip some notional volunteer off of the ground so they can be brought aboard the aircraft. It would be pretty damn unpleasant, I imagine.

Excellent. Now do Lise Meitner. Nominated 30 times for the Nobel in Physics, and 19 in Chemistry. She had primacy of publishing on electron emission, it should bear her name at least. Amongst her many other successes.

If you, btw, would like an example of a place where data centres are *actually* being restricted by legislation, go look at Denmark - where they are now last in the grid connection queue, prioritising socially valuable load growth (like electrification, heating, cooling, new homes) first

Denmark Puts Data Centers Last in New Grid Law
Denmark's emergency grid law puts data centers last behind households and green-transition projects, formalizing rationing that began in February 2026.

So serious question: if these businesses go bust and you get stuck with an abandonware oven, would it then be permissible to pop the firmware or write a little web service that would put it back into service? Can you cause harm to the company if it doesn't exist?

Took my cameras for a walk as the weather was cool and a bit drizzly. Thought I would head down and see if the Precambrian was still there. Pleased to report it is. For the #geology types, enjoy some folds and layers. I'm told they're good. They're certainly beautiful.

There are alternating thin and thick stripes where sediment was deposited over unbelievable time scales. Standing along the axis of an eroded layer of rock formation, which leads the eye to the curved form of many differently colored layers. I don't know rock words. I'm new at this. In case anyone wanted to know what color the rocks really are, here's a correction target to calibrate to. Pretty rock things in the background.

The fact that they think they have the right, or the ability, to evaluate people based on appropriating their language is insane. No other industry oversteps boundaries with such smug contempt. My master’s thesis was on this specifically, and it is scary and will be wrong.

It's Stanislav Petrov day. Anyone who wants to cram LLM trash into systems with human consequences should be required to write a twelve page book report on Stanislav Petrov, and why he has a day. It should include why they happen to be alive to write it.
