Does anyone have a good analysis of the shift needed to flip a trifecta in the Texas legislature? Wild ass possibilities if Ds can do a gerrymander of their own (and if feeling wild add on Maine/Nebraska allocation for electors).

This is broadly correct. "Bribed/in the pocket of X" stuff is only true for small potatoes things nobody hears about. Susan Collins helping direct $ to a random defense contractor? Totally plausible bribe. But any big public stance on a major issue? They are who they say they are.

“No they really believe it” is a way better heuristic for understanding political actors than “they are on the take” 9 times out of 10. Sometimes beliefs are downstream of materialism and political economy. But these relationships are more complicated than “bribes”

I want to believe. I don't know if I can believe, but I want to believe. If I'm going full hopium, it's a midterm where turnout differential is a much bigger factor, and pollsters have been so burned on D oversampling that they're cranking a ton of stuff to favor Rs and... maybe too much?

It's basically the opposite of inclusive design. Intentionally exclusive design ends up hurting more people than you intended to exclude, which is one of several reasons it's bad.

Also worth remembering that allied leadership did not take Hitler's entreaties about 1918 and the vows to never surrender seriously. In late 1944 they widely expected some form of negotiated German surrender as the walls obviously closed in.

real friendships involve the other person pushing back against you, having needs, being busy, not being able to devote themselves to you. we know from the experience of the powerful that having somebody at your literal beck and call is a factor in driving people mad.

Realizing the extent to which this is true wildly changed my opinions about how to deal with Trumpism, since they're never going to be satisfied unless they're actively dominating everyone else. You can't give them some concessions and go back to the status quo: they're reactionary revolutionaries.

I think this relates to more than just disease. There's a conspiratorial mindset where bad things can't simply be randomness or large scale social phenomena. 9/11 trutherism, Qanon, election denialism, etc.

People don’t want to hear diseases just happen. It scares them to death. They need it to be because of malign actors or because they didn’t take the right thing. The fact that it could happen to anyone, anytime, just because is terrifying because you can’t control it. Whether autism/covid it’s fear.

Just gonna toss out there that one of the central facts of US politics--all politics, really--is that the general populace knows very little about who holds power, how gov't works, what policies do & don't exist, the balance of economic forces, or really much of anything outside their lifeworlds.

Celebrating and elevating members of our community who sacrificed their lives to fight for our freedom in a medium that members of our community relate to (goofy state fair ag art) is good. Not cringe! Pretty straightforwardly effective radicalization propaganda.

The Democratic Party has let a consulting industry exploit elderly donors in its name, wreck its reputation and finances in the process, and walk away rich whether the party wins or loses. When a mirror is held up, the instinct is to break the glass rather than look. On why the press looks away:

My whole thing is that *even if* an LLM was giving near perfect legal advice the fact that it is not privileged is so destructive as to make it worse than useless in many cases. Every single question and answer is subject to discovery! One subpoena to Claude and your case is ruined.

They already had Trump over a barrel and agreeing to everything they wanted and it all fell apart because the Israelis made clear from the moment that piece of paper was signed in Versailles that they would not comply under any circumstances.

Until Iran either has a credible plan to pressure Israel into submitting to Iranian hegemony (no such plan exists, and at this stage of the war, no credible plan could exist, because Israel desperately wants to fight!) or is willing to drop that demand *to the US and Gulf States*, this is stupid.

I think that to the extent this isn't retroactive, it is constitutional as to consular employees. It's settled law that anyone with diplomatic immunity doesn't get citizenship for their kids. Trump does have the power to grant diplomatic immunity to broad categories of foreign consular employees.

I think there are issues where you have deeds that haven't been recorded. The Berenson thing is with his mom (who's a NYC resident) living in an apt "owned" by his (deceased) dad. If they never recorded it switching to her, the city sees a $$$ property owned by a nonresident.

The problem with this is that there is no way short of fundamental constitutional reform to abolish the two-party system. As long as the President is fully in charge of the executive and is an independently elected individual person, you will have exactly two parties.

To add to this: conspiracism is often about feeling like the world is controllable, and that bad things are the result of malicious bad actors who can be identified and rooted out/punished. It's the mindset that has people yearning for a strongman who will get the bums out and leave utopia.

This OTOH is a silly concern. Selling fresh food safely is a very well solved problem and the city-run stores aren't going to be stocking past-date stuff or not paying for refrigeration repairs. I am very confident that food bought there would be perfectly safe.

a pride parade is a deeply organized, planned, and role-based event; it just offers spaces for roles like "person who is queer and/or doing kink in public". it is *not* a spontaneous thing and it does not simply emerge from the erotic impulses of the people, people have to make it happen

Yeah the durability of new cars is wild honestly. You can be driving around in a 10+ year old car and it's perfectly normal and generally reliable. That was not at all the case in the 80s.
