"We are going to have to live here with each other" is the exact premise that Republicans do not agree about. Their proposition is mass immiseration, mass expulsion and mass murder. The only way to oppose political violence and avoid further political violence is to contend directly with that fact.

It's bad that somebody tried to shoot Trump. It's bad that somebody shot Charlie Kirk. And it was bad when crowds broke into the Capitol building chanting that they planned to hang the VP. This is why pardoning those responsible for political violence is a stupid move. Do you see it now?

Justin Webb just referred on Today to "platforms like Bluesky, where you can see the celebration of the killing" of Charlie Kirk. What I'm seeing on here is overwhelming condemnation; despair at the violence of US politics; alarm at where this might go; & calls for equal horror at other shootings.

Okay, so what I've seen so far isn't generally rejoicing over Kirk's death, more a refusal to grieve and widespread dread at what the Right will do with this latest trigger.

So MSNBC reportedly fired Matthew Dowd tonight just hours after Jesse Watters called for his "immediate" termination over his Charlie Kirk shooting comments. Meanwhile, Watters said he's going to "avenge" Kirk's death because "they are at war with us" -- and he'll face no repercussions from Fox.

The NYPD officer killed by the active shooter was an immigrant from Bangladesh. He had 2 kids and a 3rd on the way. The US State Dept travel advisory for Bangladesh is level 3; “Reconsider Travel” for violence, crime and terrorism. He died here, for us, shot with a Colt M4 rifle. Think about that.

Exactly. Once they admit he’s done one bad thing, there can be no stopping point, as he’s a bottomless pit of moral depravity. And once they step on that slippery slope, they can’t escape their own culpability. So instead they look away, and lie to others—and to themselves.

Yup. As I’ve said before, the right’s constant sense of grievance even as they control every branch of government stems from the fact that the base doesn’t really want specific policy reforms. They’re angry about cultural trends the government can’t really do anything about in a free society.

This part of 9th C decision ruling for Trump is worth attending two. ON THE EVIDENCE PRESENTED, court ruled harm to USG overrules that of CA. But it leaves open possibility that 1) CA will need Guard to fight fires or 2) CA can show Guard is causing protests. www.documentcloud.org/documents/25...
Plaintiffs also urge that the public interest is in their favor because the
“continued presence of National Guard members” in Los Angeles “risks worsening,
not improving, tensions on the ground” and the federalization of the National Guard
“impairs the Guard’s ability to perform critical functions for the State,” including
support for fighting forest fires and combatting drug trafficking. These concerns are
counterbalanced by the undisputed fact that federal property has been damaged and
federal employees have been injured, and the evidence presented in the TRO hearingshowed that the federalized National Guard members were engaged only in
protecting federal personnel and property. Additionally, at least with respect to the
issues presented here, Plaintiffs’ concerns have more bearing on the question of
whether the President should have federalized the California National Guard, not
whether he had the authority to do so under § 12406. We also note that California’s
concerns about escalation and interference with local law enforcement, at present,
are too speculative. We do not know whether future protests will grow due to the
deployment of the National Guard. Cf. Murthy v. Missouri, 603 U.S. 43, 72 (2024)
(“In these circumstances, [Plaintiffs] cannot rely on ‘the predictable effect of
Government action on the decisions of third parties’; rather, [they] can only
‘speculat[e] about the decisions of third parties.’” (third alteration in original)
(quoting Dep’t of Com. v. New York, 588 U.S. 752, 768 (2019))). And we do not
know what emergencies may occur in California while the National Guard is
deployed. Accordingly, at this time and on these facts, the remaining stay factors
weigh in favor of Defendants.
