Khalil Gibran, in his book The Prophet, wrote : Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of life’s longing for itself. They come through you, but they are not of you. 🌟 perhaps this turns the question “Who am I?” into a more important one.. “Whose” am I?

Continuously in awe of the fact that all knowledge builds on learned knowledge. If you ever have the chance, watch the patience of an early-childhood educator guiding a kid through a difficult new idea and then consider the entire communal effort of generational education throughout history.

Even contamination or cleanliness themes which like, the popular stereotype seem to be based on, are totally misunderstood. “You’re so neat and tidy!” “I can’t tell if I’ve eliminated all the dust that possibly has trace levels of toxins, and I feel like I’m gonna die, so I have to clean again.”

People just don’t know what OCD really is. Imagine saying “I feel like I gotta drive back around this corner like 10 times to make sure I didn’t accidentally hit someone with my car. I’m so quirky!” Or “Oops I got stuck checking whether the gas stove was left on for an hour. I’m so quirky!”

Remembering Rawls’s term ‘the fair value of political liberty.’ Political donation caps are opposed by those who hate the idea of genuinely fair and free elections and hope to benefit by someone putting a finger on the scales on their behalf (though Trade Union funding complicates things).

It’s a super paradoxical lesson to learn that you can care *better* by caring less. It makes you feel like a bad person at first!

Caring excessively about things that are worth caring about? Self-undermining because your “care” becomes smothering. Caring excessively about things that aren’t worth caring about? A mistake twice over. Caring excessively by caring about too many things? Now you’re spread too thin and burnt out.

It bugs me that we're normalising the idea that there's something wrong with long documents, or that they're not "worth" our time. There is huge value in careful thought, in detail and nuance, in exploration, and in the experiential journey that goes alongside that.

Failing to appreciate nature is a telltale sign that someone lacks the virtue of appreciating what’s good. Tom Hill Jr. has a nice short paper on this, with a funny little example with Stalin and Khrushchev. www.environmentandsociety.org/sites/defaul...

Tolkien gave up on writing a sequel to the Lord of the Rings because he imagined the youth of Gondor forming 'orc-cults' who would imitate Mordor and found it too depressing; a remarkable feat of imagination when it came to predicting people who still worship the Soviet or Nazi empires today.

I actually do not get, at all, the instinct that dolls are not worth studying. It does actually strike me as pretty interesting that we have so consistently throughout history made little people and used them as make belief aides. Why would that be even prima facie contemptible or absurd to study?

I‘ve been thinking about Walter‘s essay all afternoon. I‘ve been trying to think of an analytic political or moral philosopher whose arguments wouldn‘t require a radical change to the status quo & I‘m struggling. Almost the entire characterisation of analytic philosophy in the piece is false.

What does it say about our culture that the solution to the conflict we created between working life and being a parent is a machine-simulacrum of oneself? What a devil’s bargain to get out of the bind we’ve created, the illusion that one can be (kind of) fully present at work and in home life.
