It's like he comes so pre-disgraced that he gets the racism as a freebie. So the Telegraph, or The Critic, or Talk TV, or the BBC, or RTE in their hurry to launder his transphobic bigotry as "controversial" just skip right by the fact he thinks black people can't act or muslims are beneath contempt.

It's an odd side-effect of him being so absurdly focused on transphobic bigotry that the fact he constantly posts *hundreds* of the most racist things I have ever read online is just never, ever mentioned. Things that would follow any other person to their grave as THE thing that disgraced them.

This is not a "you didn't KNOW?" post because I truly envy and respect anyone unaware of Linehan's output BUT he's been EXTREMELY racist for years now. Attacking black actors on his wife's show Motherland as diversity hires; podcast screeds about muslims in Ireland; delighting in Palestinian deaths.

Just catching up with this story. Turning Point UK came to my neighbourhood to “protect our kids” from drag queen storytellers at the Honor Oak pub. I don’t think people appreciate how much the English far right is tied up with Ulster Loyalism, and how dangerous this is in a time of polarisation.

"post 1997 settlement had comprehensively failed" and "Several missions to Mars have now been launched from Britain's space port".

I think all this is right and add that the possibility of meaningful debate also hinges on the audience, maybe even more importantly than the debaters themselves - what they're looking for out of the disagreement, how they evaluate performance, etc bsky.app/profile/alex...

it's understandable to think of constructive debate as an ideal and then to figure that *any* debate is therefore a step towards political values and virtues. but I think most debates, particularly in the social media age, make conversations and outlooks worse than where they started

These are unlikely overlaps most of the time. People with the same values and knowledge are often going to tend towards the same position. People who lack strong views on a subject often aren't interested in knowing much about it.

Like, to have a meaningful debate, you require at least two participants who: - know a lot about the subject - have some common values about the purpose of the debate - hold conflicting positions on the subject - but do not hold those positions particularly strongly

The fetishisation of "debate" as some sort of grand public good that everyone should do is so thoughtless and jarring to me because the more you actually do it the more it becomes apparent that genuinely constructive debate is actually a pretty niche thing.

"The Jews who went to Mississippi didn't take selfies and post tweets." Okay, but honestly, if tweets had been a thing in 1961, many of them probably would have done.
Tweet from David Friedman: "The Jews who went to Mississippi didn’t take selfies and post tweets of performative stunts to gain notoriety and virtue signal. They actually put their lives at risk to protect truly oppressed people. Comparing the two just highlights how detached you are from reality."

So, due to the #KateGate / #WherelsKate missing Kate Middleton / Princess of Wales #Katespiracy drama, lots of people around the world have increased interest in Rose Hanbury and her mysterious connection to Prince William.

Unfortunately, people in China looked a little too closely at this photoshoot of the Marquis and Marchioness of Cholmondeley in their gorgeous stately home, and noticed that it’s full of authentic Chinese furniture and artefacts that were stolen from China during the fall of the Qing dynasty, and they are pissed.
