The tale of two Septembers. 2026 vs 2023. Both equally warm in the Northern Hemisphere, but Antarctica makes all the difference. Record warm in 2023, below average in 2026. Hence 2026 likely only 2nd warmest such month in recorded history #ClimateEmergency #ElNiño

Just a reminder from Zeke during yesterday’s Berkeley Earth media event:
Global surface temperature lags the tropical Pacific by about 2 to 5 months.

With the event expected to peak around
December 2026, the bulk of its warming shows up in 2027.

That makes 2027 a strong candidate for a new annual record.

This is true. In this case I think maybe DW should have said something like this: "Europe’s largest economy is now the third country, after France and the Netherlands, to present a national roadmap aimed at implementing the COP28 commitment to transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems."

Peter du Toit @peterdutoit.com · 24/09/2026
I think the DW phaseout comment is related to energy systems? (COP28) But as you say the Netherlands isn't clear, in one place they say by 2050 they want to be using energy from renewables but then elsewhere they say "minimize the use of fossil fuels in 2050."
