Some positive publishing news to counter some of the doomerism: total book sales, and adult fiction specifically, increased in 2025. Print was 73% of market and digital audio/ebook 22%. (I guess the remaining is physical audio?) www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

Publishing Sales Hit $32.5 Billion in 2025
Total estimated industry sales rose 2.5% over 2024, according to the year-end report from the AAP, and the number of books sold inched up 0.4%, to 3.15 billion units.

(I think sometimes when a person absolutely HATES an artwork, but also sort of recognizes that your reaction to it is both well-founded AND excessive, that you're not wrong, but also being unfair, you get a critical statement that sticks the knife in and then talks about how knives, really, are bad)

This gets at what most of the film critics I've seen have been saying, which is that EW's real, mostly-unspoken position is that The Odyssey should not be a film at all, bc the terms in which she critiques it map onto a rejection of film as such. (What if, though, she's RIGHT? She might be.)

A gentle reminder for all that at least HALF of a screenplay’s “writing” is devoted to scene descriptions, exposition of action, and details about what the camera does & what POV it reveals—the only evidence of which are the moving pictures we see onscreen.

Imprint: Liveright
Professor of law at New York University and codirector of the NYU-Yale American Indian Sovereignty Project Maggie Blackhawk's AMERICAN COLONIALISM: A NATIONAL BIOGRAPHY, unearthing a largely overlooked history of how the United States became the nation it is today, with all of its triumphs and tribulations; exploring the development of key institutions—such as the bureaucracy, the Supreme Court, the presidency, and the concept of citizenship—through the unexamined lens of territorial expansion, dispossession, and colonization; and seeking to bridge the gap between constitutional history and the history of the American West, to Maria Goldverg at Liveright, in a good deal, at auction, for publication in September 2027, by Christopher Rogers at Dunow, Carlson & Lerner (world).

"Reworking a classic is challenging, but, as Beals writes, the greater ordeal was 'to spend months with these young soldiers, in the trenches and in their heads, to know them intimately enough to give them new voices in a new language, and then to watch them die.'"

Checking the Odyssey drama on Twitter, and it's amazing how these dudebro assholes PRETEND to know the classics, but really don't. The first two acclaimed translations of the Odyssey, Chapman (1616) and Pope (1726) are in iambic pentameter. Dactylic doesn't work in English...
A tweet from "Librarian Mama": "Oh, you've never read The Odyssey???"

Your timing is perfect. Emily Wilson's translation is the best one in literally ages, has that sweet iambic pentameter to give it a "bouncy" feel, & makes dudebros cry that the classic has "gone woke". 😁

Then a photo of Emily Wilson, whose arms have tattoos.A reply Tweet by "Charles Bentley-Astor": "The Odyssey is in dactylic hexameter.

Why would you "translate" it and render it in iambic pentameter (English metre)?

To give the poem a sense of rhythm more intuitive to English speakers? No. To rob the "dudebros" of their one remaining piece of classical literature - the one story from which they can take inspiration and see their heritage.

Vandalism for vandalism's sake."
