In this exquisite Nihonga composition by Shigemi Yasuhara, a single magnolia blossom (taisanboku) blooms in quiet majesty against a warm, aged ochre background. Rendered with luminous, powdered white pigment (gofun), the broad, velvety petals open to reveal a detailed green cone and crimson-tipped stamen at the flower's center. Surrounding the bloom is a rich arrangement of thick, leathery leaves depicted in contrasting tones: deep forest green and patinated olive-bronze on their upper surfaces, paired with warm ochre and golden-tan tones along their undersides. Subtle variations in wash and fine contour lining give each leaf a natural weight and sculptural presence.
Shigemi Yasuhara stands as a celebrated artist within the tradition of modern Japanese Nihonga (Japanese-style painting). Renowned for refined bird-and-flower subjects (kachō-ga), Yasuhara's work continues a long line of botanical study that emphasizes intimate observation, poetic restraint, and spatial harmony
The work showcases an exceptional standard of monozukuri (mastery of artistic craft and material technique). Executed with natural mineral pigments (iwa-enogu) and pulverized clam-shell white (gofun) ground onto silk or handmade paper, the subtle layering of pigments achieves a soft, opaque dimensionality without sacrificing delicate brush precision. The careful treatment of the leaves—capturing the distinct difference between the glossy upper surface and the velvety golden underside—reflects both botanical accuracy and traditional painterly craft.

When Ukraine destroys Russian data centers, hoards of aggressive right-wing bots disappear & the internet becomes friendlier. So much of politics is driven by the internet & so much of the internet is driven by Russians who want to hurt us. Shouldn’t we do something about that, given that we know it

My first morning in the Omaze house. I didn’t sleep. I could hear crying from behind the door I’m not allowed to open. The only thing to eat is frozen prawns. I went for a wander round the 4 acre garden and found a box of VHS tapes marked ‘For the next one’. I’m sure it’s fine. I’m sure it’s all fine

Even leaving any politics at all aside: as general rule, no state can allow a group of masked men to be able to close down critical infrastructure. This is basic stuff.

If "legitimate concerns" were considered to excuse illegitimate methods, then nobody from Just Stop Oil or Palestine Action would have been arrested. So we know it doesn't. In fact that phrase is only ever used in one context. Only in that context is uniformed mob intimidation "peaceful protest"

I simply do not understand what's going on in Labour that renders its leaders incapable of finding a TV camera and speaking out against street violence. Even if you assume they agree about immigration, violence is wrong, unpopular AND against the interests of any even vaguely left wing govt.

As a very basic thing, we as citizens should not accept the presence of a private army of masked racist thugs on the streets of our towns... intimidating others and threatening to overthrow the state... There are some fairly obvious precedents for this stuff.
