So watched the hearing live. On one hand, this moment was bizarre. On the other, as it happened, it was so on par with the rest of the travesty of the coordinated GOP concocted attacks on Smith that the NYT running commentary didn't even bother to remark on it
US Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) holds up a poster as flagrantly racist as it is weird poster concocted by Missouri Senator Eric Schmidt to use in a gotcha moment against Special Counsel Jack Smith at hearings of the Judiciary Committee. It shows Georgia prosecutors Fani Willis and Nathan Wade, whose case against Trump were disqualified after a prolonged smear campaign, on the left and a headline to the effect that they acknowledged a personal relationship. To the right of the poster are texts by Smith's staff, or perhaps security detail, saying he is in his seat at a basketball game. This was supposed to implicate Smith in conspiring with Willis against Trump, with a bit of sex thrown in, by suggesting that Smith met with Willis on Feb. 3, 2024, the day after Willis confessed an affair with co-worker Wade. (I know, it makes no sense, but it gets worse). Schmidt demanded of Smith whether he was at a Hawks Golden State Warriors game in Atlanta on February 3, then brandished the poster as proof that he was, then hid the poster, while concluding that Smith was a "dirtbag" for hiding the meeting. Fast Forward to Senator Klobuchar insisting Smith be shown the poster, Smith recollecting he had attended a WNBA game between U of Md and Iowa to see Caitlin Clark. But the game had been in Maryland, and Klobuchar confirming the date of the game, and figuring out that Schmidt's staff had confused the U of Iowa's Hawkeyes with the Atlanta Hawks, and insisting Schmidt apologize to Smith. Which Schmidt didn't. But when the next GOP Senator took up questioning, Katie Britt (R-AL) congratulated Caitlin Clark for her skills and called for "safe" conditions for female players, pulling in a GOP attempt to embroil the WNBA in its attack on trans players in sport. Which, just as all of it, was completely unrelated to Smith's work investigating Trump's part in mishandling stolen secret documents at a Florida resort or instigating a riot at the US Capitol in order to steal the 202 election.
