Imagine if President Obama had flown around the country with a substitute wife because Michelle hated his guts. The media would have filed impeachment papers themselves

By the time you realize you made a strategic error, it’s often too late. America’s strategic error was electing a government that promised racism and incompetence because electing a Black woman was a bridge too far. It’s FAFO season, America.

I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

I’m a big fan of this photo of Madonna looking like a visiting lecturer who will absolutely not give you an extension on your modernist poetry essay just because you chipped your tooth on a Snickers bar.
Madonna, seated at a desk in front of a typewriter and a stack of books. Madonna is wearing trousers and a white shirt.

1. Mitch McConnell suffered a fall on June 14 and has not been in the Senate for two months. But he's continued to get paid his salary of 174K/year. Since he entered the Senate in 1985, McConnell has voted against creating or expanding medical leave — paid and unpaid — at least 23 times.

Look, The New York Times can't report on *everything* Yes, yes, this Republican congressman urged a military-backed coup to overthrow an election. But did you know that a gubernatorial candidate said she didn't like Thanksgiving? You can't cover it all. It's all about priorities, people.

Climate is a pattern, and the pattern has changed. = Climate Change
Graphic reading, “The difference between ‘There used to be hot summers too.’ and climate crisis.” Below is a temperature-anomaly chart showing mostly blue, cooler-than-average years in the earlier record, shifting dramatically toward sustained red, warmer-than-average years in recent decades. Occasional earlier red bars are labelled “These were hot summers,” while the sustained cluster of increasingly warm recent years is labelled “This is climate change.”

The little girl was still in Bluey pajamas.

No older than 3, she was trying to smell the flowers.

At her side, a pink rolling bag.

Her father, Joan Sebastian Guerrero, had just been fatally shot and yanked from a car he’d been driving. Now, he lay handcuffed in the street, where he would remain for five hours.

“You took her dad, you took her dad!” a woman nearby yelled, according to Cecelia Humiston, 22, who witnessed the interaction in Biddeford on Monday morning.

Is Jeff Bezos truly too dumb to understand that government's not a for-profit business? Or that schoolkids aren't packages? Amazon workers are forced to work at dangerous speeds, get injured at an absurd rate, & don't get bathroom breaks -> Amazon's delivery speed is powered by human suffering.
Story headline: "Jeff Bezos On Wealth Tax Proposals"

Text: 'Jeff Bezos: "If we ran Amazon the way New York City runs their school system, packages would take 6 weeks to arrive, we would charge you a $100 delivery fee and when the package did arrive, it would have the wrong item in it."

New issue of Popeye, a Japanese menswear mag, looks great. It's a rare all-English edition and looks at how people from 18 different countries dress. Very aligned with my view of style: diversity and differences are good, and dress is a form of social language. Avail at Kinokuniya.

My cartoon for this week’s @newscientist.com
Two archaeologists stand in a trench looking at an unearthed, fossilised, time machine and a tyrannosaurus skull in whose jaws is a human skeleton holding an aerosol can. One says: “These fossils would appear to suggest that, while Professor Cooper's time machine was a great success, his dinosaur repellent formula was not.”

Just a reminder - whenever you read the word “ex-pat” if the roles were reversed in the UK, the British media would call them “immigrants”. There are currently 240,000 immigrants from the UK currently living in UAE for purely economic reasons.

Screenshot of a post from Mark Gadala-Maria @markgadala that reads:

This is wild.
143 million people thought they were catching Pokémon. They were actually building one of the largest real-world visual datasets in Al history.
Niantic just disclosed that photos and AR scans collected through Pokémon Go have produced a dataset of over 30 billion real-world images. The company is now using that data to power visual navigation Al for delivery robots.
Players didn't just walk around with their phones.
They scanned landmarks, storefronts, parks, and sidewalks from every angle, at every time of day, in lighting and weather conditions that staged photography would never capture. They documented the physical world at a scale no mapping company with a fleet of vehicles could have replicated on the same timeline or budget.
The most valuable Al training datasets in the world aren't being assembled in data centers. They're being built by people who have no idea they're building them.
