Your voice reveals more than what words you say. Linguistics Prof. Nicole Holliday (@mixedlinguist.bsky.social) studies the subtle speech patterns that shape perceptions of identity, belonging + trust — and why those insights matter as AI-generated voices become more common. Read more:

Why do people think there's conceptual inflation when there isn't? We suggest that it is, in part, just due to the diversity in language use. There is an assumption that drives me up the wall behind a lot of these complaints. People seem to think each word can only have this one meaning.

New article: Anna-Bella Sicilia, "Love, Fairness, and Sharing a Life", Philosophers' Imprint 26: 2. doi: doi.org/10.3998/phim... Abstract in alt text. #philsky
According to a long philosophical tradition and a potent kernel of common sense, loving partnerships are governed by affection and care, and so not properly evaluated by standards of justice or fairness. In this paper I precisify and challenge this idea. I argue that love and fairness are unified in the sense that some partners are only able to perform particular act-types (loving and expressing love) if their actions are sensitive to considerations of fairness. When loving acts are aimed at “sharing a life”, we properly evaluate more-basic acts of sharing–where this concerns their adherence to standards of fairness–as a way of evaluating them as complex acts of loving. Life-sharing offers an attractive feminist ideal of love, immune to concerns about the alleged imposition of fairness-related considerations where they don’t belong.

UCSC will host the second iteration of their Queer Aφ conference this June 22-24. The first one was an absolute banger, and I hear there's an afterparty, too. Abstracts can be submitted until March 31, and check out philevents.org/event/show/1... for more details.
A flyer that says QUEER Aϕ - UC SANTA CRUZ - JUNE 22-24 2026 - QUEER ANALYTIC PHILOSOPHY in the center. In smaller print, the words "Keynote: Rowan Bell (Guelph)" appear, as do "Sponsored by UCSC Philosophy and APA Diversity and Inclusion Grant", "Talks", "Poster Session", "Activism Workshop", "Grad Student Prize" and "Public Events". The flyer has 4 banana slugs on it in 2 pairs, with the slugs facing away from each other so that their antennae look sort of like an upcurled mustache . There are some butterflies and swirling galactic rainbows superimposed over a grid.

I regret to announce that I am leaving my post as the Wykeham Professor after mounting pressure from administrators who insist I never worked at the university.
A New York Times headline states "Halligan leaves as U.S attorney after mounting pressure from judges." The caption continues "Judges had pressed Lindsey Halligan to explain why she continued to identify herself as the U.S. attorney, despite a ruling that she was unlawfully appointed." No attempt is made to explain how someone could leave a position they never occupied.
