This is quite extraordinary. I don't think I have heard a more coherent, articulate and accurate deconstruction & demolition of Nigel Farage's ReformUK, Tory & Restore policy than this. In under 85 seconds! @rafaelbehr.bsky.social is on here folks and worth a follow.

Braverman say outright that Rashford being black cant be Englieh? No white Reform MP would say Marcus Rashford can't be English because he is black, nor that Sunak isnt English She is de facto deploying an odd form of Asian minority privilege to make ethnically exclusionary arguments about others
Thoughtlessness could prove an important defence for Braverman. It seems deeply unlikely that she would defend the outcomes that her piece logically entails – when applying it to the specific cases of those who identify as English, without five or six generations of English ancestry. But she would surely lose the Conservative whip were she willing to do that – since it would involve rejecting the English identity – on racial grounds – of many people accepted as English by just about everybody who is not a vocal and overt racist.

Braveman has over a hundred Conservative parliamentary colleagues who do identify as English. If she sense-checked her theory with them, she would find it unlikely that any would declare that Marcus Rashford and Jude Bellingham are too black to be English – nor that Moeen Ali’s declaration of his pride in being English should be rejected on the grounds of his visibly Muslim beard and Pakistani heritage. It may seem even more baffling that the ‘Braverman rules’ would reject Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney as too Irish to be English too.

Sporting symbolism has undoubtedly entrenched

This shit with Ed Sheeran, one of the most mediocre but also popular musicians around, saying "there are different ways people can advocate for change without shouting about it", is really reminding me of how much and why I find conflict avoidant tendencies so unattractive.

Imagine the good you could do with £72 million pounds. Now imagine what Reform will do with it. Shocking and depressing AF that two Labour Prime Ministers have allowed this to happen. The short sightedness is unforgivable

Burnham knew this would be the result of dropping his pledge to cap political donations, but he did it anyway. Labour are determined to midwife a Reform government, like plenty of other centrist parties before them whose weakness paved the way for right wing extremists.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

Farage and the far right in general come from a grievance culture. If you do what they want, even maximally – Brexit – they’ll move the goalposts and keep moaning. If you engage seriously with their concerns, they’ll find new ones. You will never satisfy them, because they don’t want to be satisfied

To be accepted, racialised people need to accept an inherently contradictory inferior identity. For example: English people of Indian descent need to deny their Englishness but Indian people in England need to abandon their Indianness and assimilate to English values.
