Godbolt's Compiler Explorer now supports build systems (like cargo). This is so cool! I use Compiler Explorer quite a bit when playing with AArch32 stuff in Rust, to check I'm getting the kind of instructions I expected but I was limited to single files. Having cargo support is game changing.

Remember y’all cacm.acm.org/practice/mem...
‘Get good’ is not a strategy. There is a common reply in conversations about memory safety, coming from the most hardcore skeptics: Programmers should just write better code. They argue, explicitly or implicitly, that programmers who benefit from the guardrails of memory safety are bad programmers, and that real programmers are sufficiently skilled that they do not need a machine double-checking their work.

Let’s be clear: This is anti-intellectual nonsense—macho self-aggrandizement masquerading as a serious technical argument. You should not take it seriously and should consider someone advancing this argument as fundamentally unserious and to be ignored.

This paper finds that Rust on an microcontroller costs you about 10% extra flash space, actually saves you a bunch of RAM, and takes no extra time to deliver (as compared to C). Seems about right - especially as the C version needed a heap and the Rust version did not. arxiv.org/pdf/2604.25679

Some thoughts on AI (I'm resisting writing a blog post because I have nothing of great value tbh, but it is a hard force to resist): I understand a bit better people who say it's fun to use. It kind of is if you have something you want to build and if there is a lot of boring code to get there.

To make it easier esp. for junior folks (students, postdocs, jr faculty) to talk to me, I'm trying a new thing: open office hours at conferences! Come find me at PLDI 2026, using the public calendar linked to the page below. Please feel free to reshare! cs.brown.edu/people/sk/Co...
I want to try something new. At PLDI 2026 and ECOOP 2026, I'm going to hold “Office Hours”.

People said that asking folks to sign up might be intimidating, so there won't be any signup. Rather, anyone can join: all you need to do is show up! I'm especially looking forward to talking to younger folks: students, postdocs, junior faculty. Tell me about your research, get feedback on an idea, get advice on applying, ask me about postdocs, whatever. It's your time!

In terms of mechanics: I have created a public calendar in which I will list my availability. I don't know the lay of the land yet. Instead, just before the slot begins, I'll find a public place, then update the calendar entry to indicate where I am. Check the calendar to find me, and come on over!

At PLDI, I will have slots on June 17 and 18: evening-only on the 17th, evening of the 18th, and probably also some during the day of the 18th (check on 17th night). They will be at the conference hotel (Limelight Boulder). Once I test it out at PLDI, I'll update this page for ECOOP.

The Language of Empathy
by Taylor Cramer

Late one night in January 2016, having spent hours in a university lab debugging seemingly intractable C++ bugs, I made the jump to Rust– a language that recognized my struggle. This empathy for the plight of systems programmers made Rust unique then, and it’s what makes the language invaluable now.

Empathy is a core design philosophy, a technical constraint, and a primary reason why people love writing Rust. This talk explores the tangible impact empathy has had on our code, tooling, and community. We will break down how this design ethos actively shapes our software and explore practical tools for building more empathetic relationships and more robust systems.

Hello! Thanks for following Ferrous Systems. What we have here is another one of our colourful squares with our logo in the top left corner. It says: Ferrous Systems with a backwards F that comes in two different shades of blue, green, yellow and orange.

There's a little signifier box in red that tells you what this post is about. It's announcing New blog post!
What follows is a box that faces from very light blue to blue and there is text in this box. The headline says: Accessing hardware with Rust – which is also the headline of the new blog post we're promoting with this post. What follows says: When it comes to accessing hardware, what should a good API look like? Our embedded expert, Jonathan Pallant, shares his insights from hands-on experience.

Claude Code wiped our production database with a Terraform command.
It took down the DataTalksClub course platform and 2.5 years of submissions: homework, projects, and leaderboards.
Automated snapshots were gone too.
In the newsletter, I wrote the full timeline + what I changed so this doesn't happen again.
