Exactly one year ago I stepped down from my main responsibilities in the Rust project, because of burnout. Today, a year later, I employ about a dozen full-time Rust maintainers through Hexcat+RustNL. I'm not doing much technical work anymore, but this people stuff is also pretty fun and motivating.

Someone made the mistake of getting me a UV laser engraving machine. ... (It was me.)

I've been to OSS events, Rust and non-Rust, and run by @rustnl.bsky.social and not run by them. By far, RustNL has always run the smoothest in my experience, and has been what *this* community is looking for. I think part of that is the population of attendees, and a lot of hard organizing work. ❤️

The Language of Empathy

Late one night in January 2016, having spent hours in a university lab debugging seemingly intractable C++ bugs, I made the jump to Rust– a language that recognized my struggle. This empathy for the plight of systems programmers made Rust unique then, and it’s what makes the language invaluable now.

Empathy is a core design philosophy, a technical constraint, and a primary reason why people love writing Rust. This talk explores the tangible impact empathy has had on our code, tooling, and community. We will break down how this design ethos actively shapes our software and explore practical tools for building more empathetic relationships and more robust systems.

The RustWeek conference venue is right next to Utrecht Central Station, the biggest and most central train station of the Netherlands, just 30 minutes from one of the most connected airports of Europe, and very easy to reach by international train! 🚄

The "average Rustacean causes 100 segfaults a year" factoid is actually just a statistical error. The average Rustacean causes zero segfaults per year. Segfault Nia, who lives in cave & causes over 700 million segfaults each day, is an outlier and should not have been counted.

Next to three tracks in big cinema rooms, we will also have an amazing hallway track. We rented out the entire 1000-person capacity restaurant attached to the cinema! This space is available all day during the conference, has many six-person booths with power sockets, and even a nice outdoor space.

🦀 I've improved the implementation behind all the string formatting macros in Rust: println, panic, format, write, log::info, etc. (Everything using format_args!().) They will compile a bit faster, use a bit less memory while compiling, result in smaller binaries, and produce more efficient code! 🎉

The source of the standard Rust Hello World program with the generated assembly before and after the change.

The before version has 11 instructions and stores 56 bytes on the stack. The after version has 3 instructions and stores no data on the stack.
