It’s very simple and it’s been said over and over but I guess it needs saying continuously: if you deem one group too small to have equal rights you are enabling fascism, not fighting it. The people saying Dems are GREAT on trans rights are not paying attention and/or saying stuff like this.

HOW I GOT TO VIETNAM

I forget what year it was —
memory will provide forgiveness.

I was 17. My grandparents had died,
and we had lost the farm to the bank.
I was draft-able, and brought up
both Mennonite and Amish —
war was not an option.

I met the Berrigan brothers
while they were burning draft cards.
They suggested becoming a medic
for the American Friends Service Committee.

I saw more action than most combat soldiers,
going in and out of warzones
bringing back the wounded,
assisting with surgery,
zipping up the dark secrets of war
in black body bags.

When people find out what I did,
they ask, didn’t it bother you?

After years of butchering on a farm,
seeing men lose hands to combines,
finding a deer shot
and dragging towards death,
it was not the blood or guts
or carrying trays with amputated arms or legs —

it was the cries for mommy

I don’t choose that word lightly. The idea that an entire field of medicine, as well as numerous academic journals, systematically suppressed evidence that gender-affirming care doesn’t work is a conspiracy theory. Meanwhile, none of these people can provide a shred of evidence for their core claim

@Aaron The integrity of academic journals is a major issue here. It's not something specific to gender medicine, though certainly the lack of viewpoints published on the subject hasn't helped.
The problems here are twofold. First, there's the one-sidedness of most of the published articles. It's much easier to get something published in JAMA or the New England Journal of Medicine if it's supportive of gender-affirming care. Second, there have been some major problems with some of the studies published on this subject. In some cases, bad outcomes for patients were overlooked. That's what the evidence reviews have found. And that doesn't inspire a lot of confidence from the public.

@David Bruce If there's one area of agreement between the health professionals who support limiting access to medical treatments and those who don't, it's that they both believe the political interference has been harmful. Medicine is definitely an area where an either/or binary doesn't usually work.
And what I've found in my reporting is the same thing Hilary Cass, the noted British pediatrician, found when she conducted a review of gender medicine for the NHS.
Evidence for and against these procedures is often misrepresented and cherry picked. So what's a parent who doesn't know how to read academic journals supposed to do?

Hawley introduces bill to remove FDA approval for Mifepristone
BY ALEXANDER BOLTON - 03/11/26 5:29 PM ETTHE HILL
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) on Wednesday unveiled legislation to remove Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the use of mifepristone to end pregnancies, a bill that has quickly gained the support of major anti-abortion groups.
The legislation is an ambitious undertaking given the drug's widespread use in the United States, where an estimated 7.5 million women have used it to terminate pregnancies since the FDA approved its use in 2000. It accounted for 63 percent of all abortions in the U.S. in 2023.
But mifepristone, which when combined with the drug misoprostol can end pregnancies at up to 70 days of gestation, has become a major target of the anti-abortion movement. President Trump has sought to satisfy those anti-abortion voices by launching an FDA review of the drug, which has not been completed.
Hawley says the ability of doctors to prescribe the drug across state lines has led to rampant abuse and alleges that incidences of adverse health effects are far more common than the drug's maker, Danco Laboratories, has acknowledged.
