The Rock of Lough Key • Roscommon Also known as McDermott's Rock, as it was the seat of the McDermotts, the ruling dynasty of Magh Luirg in Connacht. The Annals of Loch Cé record a disaster in 1184, when the Rock was hit by lightning. Duvesa, wife of Conor McDermott, and over 100 people perished.

I love these books - they were a secret language between me, my dad, my brother & my brother's friends - I feel ridiculously nostalgic seeing them again. Lucky whoever finds them in Secondhand - hope you enjoy the fish!
Angled view of Douglas Adams’ five-book Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy box set, standing on piles of secondhand books at Chapters. The bright yellow slipcase displays the series title, a blue towel and a “42 anniversary collection” badge. All five dark blue book spines are visible.

It’s not unusual to come away with your new glasses with the uneasy feeling that you have paid quite a bit more than expected. It's also the case with eye tests. Specsavers, for example, advertises 'free' eye tests - but often charges far more 'advanced' tests. jrnl.ie/7182508

Eye tests are supposed to be free, so why does Specsavers charge for them?
Many Irish customers have complained about upselling in Specsavers – but ‘advanced’ eye tests may be a good idea for some.

A west of Ireland #painting, "Mayo Bog" I painted following a day where I had cycled north through Ballycroy and kept stopping just to enjoy the bog. There's not a lot else to say except I think we're quite lucky in Ireland to have the bogs that we do. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas. In expressive brush marks are a yellow sky with orange under-painting breaking through, a peaked patchy dark hill of oranges and blues sitting on the horizon to the right with some lime green fields at its base, and the edge of a distant blue hill on the left edge. The rest of the painting, the bottom two-thirds, being the flatness of the yellow ochre bog running across the full width of the painting, and in the foreground cut away revealing the maroon cut turf, with grasses, some long, and bog plants in front of it along the bottom rendered in blues, oranges, yellows, and whites. Some white is on top of the flat stretch of the bog across the middle, perhaps flowers, and some dark lines suggestive of tracts or cuts. Signed top left in dark blue, Liam Daly

This sheela na gig is on display in the Ulster Museum. It is thought to have originally belonged to the church of Errigal Keerogue, Tyrone.
A stone carving known as a sheela na gig. It is classed as a female exhibitionist figure. It has a pained expression with gritted teeth and round staring eyes, and pendulous breasts. The right arm extends forward over the vulva; and the left backwards and under the leg.

It doesn't matter that Ireland only has miniscule fragments of native forests left, or that these are mostly in a dying state. When it comes to fixing that, everything takes forever and is piecemeal, if it even happens at all. It's always plenty of talk and written reports, but little or no action.

Cooking in a Bedsitter has arrived in Secondhand. Is that a mouse hanging on the cover? 🐭 Inside: a lovingly handwritten recipe involving beans, chilli, “thickish brown gravy” and fruit added at the end. We cherish the note. We have some questions about dinner.
A handwritten recipe on a torn sheet of lined paper found inside the book. It begins by simmering red beans, then adds onion, chilli powder, mushrooms and meat. The beans are stirred into “thickish brown gravy”, with fruit added near the end.Worn black paperback cover of Katharine Whitehorn’s Cooking in a Bedsitter. A candle stands beside a row of hooks holding a cup, food, a knife and a small furry object that looks rather like a mouse.
