A New Color (1/5🧵)
Page 1: A man is walking home, smoking a cigarette, being quietly trailed by a UFO above him. As he enters his apartment, two aliens watch from inside the ship. Alien 1, who has a large head, says, “that’s him. Let’s move.” Page 2: The man walks upstairs as the aliens watch from the entrance of the building. The man enters his apartment and greets his little dog. Suddenly there is a knock at the door.Page 3: he peers through his peephole, and sees the two aliens standing in the hallway. Alien 1 is holding a briefcase. From behind him, the voice of alien one: “don’t scream.” Page 4: The aliens are seated across the room on the man’s couch. Sadie is in her bed next to them. Alien 1 says, “you’re not in any danger. Have a seat.” The man looks at his dog and thinks, “sadie is unusually calm.” Alien 1: don’t scream, or it’s a problem.

The second panel zooms in on them.

Soft Rains Day. "Today is August 4, 2026, in the city of Allendale, California. Today is Mr. Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable, as are the water, gas, and light bills." RIP Ray Bradbury, 1920-2012
There Will Come Soft Rains
By: Ray Bradbury

In the living room the voice-clock sang, Tick-tock, seven o'clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o 'clock! as if it were afraid that nobody would. The morning house lay empty. The clock ticked on, repeating and repeating its sounds into the emptiness. Seven-nine, breakfast time, seven-nine!
In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior eight pieces of perfectly browned toast, eight eggs sunny side up, sixteen slices of bacon, two coffees, and two
cool glasses of milk.
"Today is August 4, 2026," said a second voice from the kitchen ceiling, "in the city of Allendale, California." It repeated the date three times for memory's sake.
"Today is Mr. Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable, as are the water, gas, and light bills."

From 2019, when the news was telling us that staring seagulls out had been proven to stop them eating your chips
[Scene is a BEACH. A man is sat eating chips on a blanket - or rather he is trying to, but a terrifying, haunted-eyed SEAGULL is stood next to him, staring intently]

SEAGULL:

Well well well.

You must be one of these ‘Starers’.

[Show man trying to stare the seagull out]

SEAGULL:

Read an article in the Guardian did ya? ‘Stare seagulls out to save your chips’...

Come on then.
Look into my eyes.

[We see his cold, terrifying, haunted eyes in close up]

Can you see the darkness?
The things I’ve seen?

[Hypnotic waves are coming out of his eyes now]

The things I’ve... eaten...?

Frozen shit from a sewage pipe off the coast of Sussex…
The still-pulsing intestines from a badger by the A602…

Thaaat’s it

Look into the truth

The truth you’ve always known.

I am a seagull.

I am harder than you.

And I am having your chips.

11 [The man’s facade breaks, His eyes water, his lips wobble]

SEAGULL [Eating chips]:

Nom nom nom.

Right. Okay. This requires some backstory. In 1984, a small, low budget film studio in North Carolina produced a parody of Star Wars, called Hyperspace. It was released in the U.K. as ‘Gremloids’. The main character, shown here, was Lord Buckethead.
A somewhat grainy, sorry, theatrical release poster.

Have that (Print run of this one now available in my shop at www.stephencollinsillustration.com)
[Scene is a BEACH. A little kid is running towards the shore. Speech bubbles that follow are mostly coming from THE SEA, which is sort of talking to us.]

1
THE SEA:
Happens all the time.

2
THE SEA:
One second they’re a kid thoughtlessly running into me for joy

[Show kid running towards the sea]

3
THE SEA:
And the next, they’re an adult standing there
contemplating my sublime, death-like endlessness.

[Show the kid instantly transformed into an adult, hands on hips, boringly contemplating the horizon].

4
THE SEA:
I mean, I get it. I’m the *Sea*.

I don’t really do the whole ‘time’ thing.

But it always seems to happen so *quick*.

5
THE SEA:
Right. One way to fix this.

[Shoe the waves licking up against their toes]

6
PERSON [shocked from cold]:
JESUS

7
THE SEA:
Come on
a bit further ….

[Person paddles out into the water a bit]

8
THE SEA:
That’s it…
bit further…

[Person wades to waist height]

9
THE SEA:
Right.

[Person standing still waist height in sea]

10
THE SEA:
HAVE THAT.

[BIG WAVE goes over them]

11
[They are instantly transformed back to a kid again]

KID [laughing]:
UURGHHAHA

12
THE SEA:
Works every time
