Chasing the shiny bits in the dark. Punishing my legs for not being rocket packs. Passionate about density, transit, walkability, and cycling infrastructure. Recovered “avid cyclist”. Big YIMBY. Seattle, Capitol Hill, but I’m not cool. He/him.

This emphasizes the need that everyone involved in planning transit routes and changes should be a regular rider of transit. It’s great that Claudia knows her route(s), but we need that on the planning side for every major route (minimum).

Back around 2000, I was driving on 101 somewhere south of San Lucas and north of San Luis Obispo. Two lanes each direction. I was in the left lane, keeping pace with traffic, and we were going 95 in a 60 mph zone. Speeding as culture is horrible everywhere, but especially psychotic in California.

Hopefully. It’s beyond the scope of that project, but SDOT’s entire approach to turn boxes on the 2-way bikeways needs to be revised. I have not found any of them to be safe.

Bikes. And yeah, James is slightly better, and it has some infrastructure, but that infrastructure is not good. I’ve been nearly hit by other cyclists too many times stopping (while signaling) in those painted turn boxes on 2nd.

A great spot and one of the things I miss about working in Pioneer Square. But also, why is there zero infrastructure for turning right off of southbound 2nd onto westbound Yesler? You have to stop in and block the bikeway or the crosswalk. Or take the lane on 2nd.

My question was badly phrased. Regardless of whether it’s instituted nationally or state-by-state, the reason year-round DST has been unpopular in practice is dark winter mornings, which is worse in northern states. Do you think there’s something different this time around?

I’m too poor to have ever lived anywhere with a flat electric stove, let alone an induction stove. I’ve only ever lived with gas stoves or coil electric stoves, and a gas stove is a billion times better to cook on than coil electric. Gas stoves should absolutely be phased out for all the obvious…

I wasn't this mom, but I am a mom who rides a cargo bike on Greenwood daily. So I say with confidence: With some work (and loss of some parking, quelle horreur), a two-way protected bike lane from 87th and Greenwood to the Fremont bridge would fundamentally change how we move around in NW Seattle.

Most people who think they saw Sputnik actually saw the core stage of the R-7 that had boosted it into orbit, which itself ended up in orbit. A 1st magnitude object is relatively easy to see, but 6th magnitude requires a dark sky and knowing exactly what you’re looking for.
From Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sputnik_1?wprov=sfti1#Launch_and_mission):

“The R-7 core stage, with a mass of 7.5 tonnes and a length of 26 metres, also reached Earth orbit. It was a first magnitude object following behind the satellite and visible at night. Deployable reflective panels were placed on the booster in order to increase its visibility for tracking. A small highly polished sphere, the satellite was barely visible at sixth magnitude, and thus harder to follow optically.”

I think it’s more like 70% of voters are anti-authoritarian, but half of those voters define “authoritarianism” as some combination of “queer people exist”, “women have bodily autonomy”, and “beef and gas aren’t being kept artificially cheap enough”.

A bunch of the podcasts I listen to have announced they’re adding a video version, and I have not, and likely will not, ever watch any of them. I can look up their faces if I’m curious, but beyond that…uh, no. I did listen to BtB for a few months in 2019. The episodes were just too long!

Accepting that no one can contain the pulsing ocean that is language, these aren’t podcasts. We already have a word for shows like this: Talk shows. Two to a few people sitting and talking is a talk show.

Podcasts are for ending up sobbing uncontrollably while folding laundry, doing the dishes, or sitting on a train/plane/bus. There is zero reason I want to watch a B-list celebrity ask a C-list celebrity about their vinyl collection while they both talk into Radio City sized microphones.

Also, it’s intellectually lazy to say (paraphrasing) “that’s just the reality of 2026”. We can make the world we want. There is no “that’s just how it is”. If you want more justice, equity, and diversity in the world, we need to work to make that happen. A lot of that work is on ourselves.
