The enormous affinity I feel towards the Scots writer Alasdair Gray only grew stronger when I learned he not only said “Work as if you live in the early days of a better nation" but also "Man is the pie that bakes & eats himself".

“Who did the council fight?"
"It split in two and fought itself."
"That's suicide!"
"No, ordinary behaviour. The efficient half eats the less efficient half and grows stronger. War is just a violent way of doing what half the people do calmly in peacetime: using the other half for food, heat, machinery and sexual pleasure. Man is the pie that bakes and eats himself, and the recipe is separation."
"I refuse to believe men kill each other just to make their enemies rich."
"How can men recognize their real enemies when their family, schools and work teach them to struggle with each other and to believe law and decency come from the teachers?"

Yesterday I paraphrased this excellent post on how Ireland's artists & musicians are taking the financial & reputational risk to support Gaza that Ireland's government refuses to take - here's the original.

Showed it in Dublin ten years ago & had a chat with @blindboyboatclub.bsky.social after the screening, it was shocking how relevant this 1968 film was to the concerns of 2016.

Since it's Raoul Coutard's birthday, here's a clip from Rocky Road To Dublin, Peter Lennon's 1968 documentary. Coutard had just shot Weekend for Godard & was about to shoot something for Truffaut, took time out to make this no-budget film about how fucked Ireland was then. youtu.be/75t38K_tQ6w?...

If I ever had a minute of facetime with Trump, I would like to tell him that he will be remembered in fifty years mostly as a scary story to tell kids - "Be good or Trump will get you." And I believe that is what will happen.

It's a very complex show, and he's a murderer, a pimp and a thief, but he's also a representative of the desperate human urge to survive and improve no matter what. I recommend you watch.

One of the things I love about Reacher (the show) is how shameless they are about dropping that title card where it goes 'boom', my favourite was the series where he ends up working security for an oligarch & you're wondering WTF then he finds his tiny hidden phone & says "I'm in." BOOM. REACHER.

The end of S1, intercutting Swearengen's mercy killing of the Reverend with Doc and Jewell dancing is actually probably the most tearjerking moment in the whole series, but the one I posted is the one that I think of most often.

Me and an ex-gf (who was recently fired by the Trump administration for defending Palestinians!) with either Claude or Cliff Trenier, who were playing for peanuts in an Atlantic City casino. The Treniers' most famous hit was Poon Tang, they were still enormously filthy fun in the mid 90s.

There are not many days that I don't remember this scene from Deadwood, and it resonates with me to the core.
"Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back." Al Swearengen

Udo Kier (UDO KIER!) gives the camera a trademark reptilian glare, he has his hand on the shoulder of a beardless filmmaker, palm trees in the background

There's a recent biography which states that Cimino transitioned some time ago, explaining how very uncomfortable they/she (unsure of their pronouns) were attending the film festival as a male-presenting person. I felt very saddened when I read that.

I took this photo of Shane McGowan the only time I properly hung out with him, we talked mostly about books (he loved hard SF, which isn't my bag but we had plenty to talk about) then he sat on my couch all night (he rarely slept) after I passed out while blasting the second Stooges LP. RIP.
