the only reason I've ever heard of the discourse song is bc I follow the delightful Irish Number Ones, but I've never actually heard the song. I started following Irish Number Ones for their Mr Brightside watch (424 weeks in total on the Irish charts, but never number 1) which I find fascinating

RIP Rachel Blau DuPlessis, poet & critic extraordinaire. from one of her poems, & from an essay of hers on George Oppen—
samaras
green
sleeves
make a moon round rainy trees.
If more seeds fall
will I learn the nature of rain?
Gather the borders snug, pupal,
eat the teachers,
all under the bosky grids of time and place and under wreathe my boughs. Here the concept of humanity is constructed by addition: one person adds himself to another, like a set of stones or bricks in a wall. This way, people can be builders. The blood from the stone is one proof that humankind can give (say, their lives during a war) to make life blossom, despite the fact that old mother Nature, who appears in the final section, is a useless "stone dead dam." People can shape their lives — it is a high responsibility, but evidently not one that is beyond us. We can choose to live with a humanist ethic, where other people are "brothers" in part because they too have been deserted by a faith and by a system of belief, and because somehow we construct a new faith on the commonality of that loss. In another important poem from The Materials ("Return"), certain seeds of hope are presented, among them a woman, Petra, whose name, perhaps accidentally (perhaps not), means stone - a woman who awakens a whole community to a social and political struggle and is therefore one of the builders of the "wall," Oppen's image for a human community.

In this interview, Rachel Blau DuPlessis says: "I was lucky enough to have George Oppen’s intransigent eye on my very early work." I was lucky enough to have Rachel's intransigent eye on my very early work. Rest in peace— dear fierce brilliant generous Rachel

Red card couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy [saracasm]. Enzo Fernández is notorious for his racism & transphobia.
Screen shot that reads: Enzo Fernandez, currently with Chelsea in London, after the national team’s victory in the Copa America held in the U.S. (following the final game against Colombia in Miami). The video features a song that ends when someone on the team bus says, “Cut the live.” This action suggests an awareness that the song was highly inappropriate and shouldn’t be shared on social media.
The song itself is a blatant display of transphobia and racism in varying degrees. The full lyrics state: “Listen, pass the ball: They play for France, but they’re from Angola.” The song goes on to describe French star Kylian Mbappe as a “cometravas,” a slang term that refers to someone who has sex with transgender people, before returning to its initial theme: “Their mother is from Cameroon, their father from Nigeria, but their passports say French.”

When I was 14 years old I read A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man on a flight from Philly to Dublin. Probably the most significant reading experience of my life, Irish & otherwise & all

Lisa Robertson, out of Riverwork, part of a lovely paean to dust (“I am a dust artist . . . displacing cosmic matter temporarily from its solid support to make a negative image of time.”) A way of talking about quotation, circulation, infinite reuse, and how language is ever-borrowed, ever-impure.

We asked writers to imagine what comes next. What’s the story after the story? Or the sequel no one asked for? How do we keep going, or revive ourselves, in the new normal?

Lazy beds on the fields above Clew Bay in Mayo this morning. Tenant farmers used these ridges to grow potatoes in the 1800s & after the famine decimated the population many were abandoned. “Lazy” is a misnomer - it required immense physical labour to create the beds on the rocky marginal soil.
Deep parallel ridges on a hill. Short grass with rushes and some rocks scattered on the land. A wire fence is on the hilltop with clear skies behind the hill.
