Does anyone enjoy being a celebrity and a friend to the powerful and bloody awful as this profoundly unturbulent priest?
Reverend Richard Coles

Some people are so awful they break the awful barrier and you realise you have started liking them*. I had this with Jeffrey Archer.
He was once a celebrity reader at a carol service I was doing and agreed to read the prologue to the Fourth Gospel. I handed him the text, he scanned it, and said gravely, 'oh dear, Father, I would SO much prefer to read the King James Version. Could you?'
Of course' I said and came back two minutes later and handed him the same piece of paper, for it actually was from the King James Bible. He looked at it again and grunted approvingly. 'Thank you, Father. Much better.

#OnThisDay 142 years ago the Circle Line was completed through the opening of Mansion House to Tower Hill, plus a branch from Aldgate to Whitechapel opened, the latter we see here: the Underground passing over the Overground... always amuses! Timara Easter buff.ly/dqEhDSO
2014 image taken from the southbound Overground platform at Whitechapel with a Class 378 departing the northbound while above an eastbound refurbished D78 District Line service departs for Upminster. This view is impossible now as the new concourse accessing the Elizabeth Line was built above, rafting over the Overground platforms (and of course the D78 stock are long gone too)

If we were told how much benefit our country collectively gets from people making stuff up out of their heads, a truly socially mobile option, we wouldn’t know our proper place. It’s why they’ve made the arts almost impossible to pursue for ordinary people. Get back on your trawler, prole scum.

If you’re a Billy Wilder fan, check out @thefilmographers.bsky.social podcast series going through every item on the great director’s filmography. This is a great interview with IAL Diamond’s son, the 7-year-old wondering what all the fuss is about that Marilyn Monroe.

Loved it. There’s a trio of RKO Fords on iPlayer and loved rewatching this and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, and discovering Wagon Master. All of them top tier.

Masterpiece...
Possibly my favourite single shot in all cinema; cinematographer Archie Stout used infra-red film for Ford that accentuated the contrasts offered by this desert vista and the dreamlike clouds gathered above. Stick it in the Louvre...

The easy way to stop there being new art for you to steal is to make it financially impossible for anybody to earn a living making art. Every branch we all sit on sawn through. Nobody asked for the branches to be sawn through. But they came and sawed through them for us all the same. Twats.

What do we do with people whose ability to tell the difference between human and non-human stumbles when they encounter a correct usage of the m-dash?

This new Reluctant Vampire adaptation is a neat solution to wanting to adapt books written by famous people (to release the funding by the usual associative magic) but needing to know they won’t do mad, creepy or upsetting shit while you’re in the middle of production. Just do dead ones.

Earworms are evil. One thing I find works is to force the earworm out by listening to a song you like that is loud enough to "scare" the other song away. My go-to is always The Birthday Party's cover of "Loose" by Iggy and The Stooges, which is actually even meaner & more abrasive than the original.

Just realised that the other great song off the M album, after Pop Music, is That’s The Way The Money Goes, and this is clearly weasel-inspired songwriting from your man The Man From M.

I don’t think I’m ever going to get the appeal of pivoting to video for podcasts. I’ve been listening to podcasts for 20 years, and never once have I thought, my God, I need to SEE these people! I’m on a walk or doing the dishes, I don’t need video.

Really enjoying Anthony Horowitz’s The Marble Hall Murders on the iPlayer, but can’t help thinking that if the horrendous, abusive children’s author at the centre of the mystery had been a male celebrity, then it would’ve been too close to reality to count as cosy crime.

Great night at the Troxy seeing the Lemonheads. Evan Dando is disintegrating inside and out but still plays and sings with verve and his charm is undiminished even if you can't understand a word he says to the audience except for the occasional COCAIIIINE or WE'LL BEAT HIM TO DEATH
Lemonheads fans wearing lemons on their heads watching the band on stage.

I suppose Guy Fawkes becomes essentially a single-word adjective (Guy-Fawkes Night). The US emphasis in Robin Hood always seems to be distinguishing him from all the other Hoods.

I can remember one American Hallowe’en, when I was four years old. I was dressed as Zorro, with a mascara moustache and a piece of chalk at the tip of my plastic rapier. We moved to the UK seven months later.

I think my ambition as a writer isn’t to write anything that any agent or publisher would look twice at today. I think my ambition is to travel back 70 years (at least) and write something that Persephone will reissue to great acclaim while I’ll mouldering in my grave.

Drawing created by Paul Davidson c.1967, in the art therapy studio at Netherne Hospital, where he was compelled to live. This is one of a small number of his surviving works & no biographical information is currently known to us
A crayon drawing of a white boy’s head with short brown hair and purple and orange rays emitting from his eyes, he is inside a square structure reminiscent of a window of theatre set with prance curtains, above a rectangle full of blue and green stars with red legs, and on either side are hands with their index fingers pointed

The *really* weird thing is that that Best-of is full of songs that -- *once mentioned* -- you go "Oh yeah, that was a massive hit!", like "Massachusetts" and "Words" and "To Love Somebody". Just doesn't have the ones you immediately think of like "Tragedy" or "Stayin' Alive" or "Jive Talkin'".

Seven years ago, I took a workshop at Warwick led by David Vann, who made it clear at the start (half jokingly) that he only really liked fiction about the death of parents. Still, I doggedly disguised my submissions as something else.

Having finished latest draft for publisher, I’m thinking of the next thing. A rough first draft I’d like to return to. Feel able at last to lean into what it really is — a fictional response to losing Mum. My usual bittersweet thing, but not a period piece this time.

You have to understand how bloody awful Sundays were 45 years ago, beyond the mere fact that there was school the next day, to understand why being allowed to watch That’s Life in your pyjamas after bath time was a genuine treat. RIP Esther Rantzen.
