Prof of clin psych, Royal Holloway. Interested in how to measure what matters, especially within the CBT model. Against: red herrings, tail-wagged dogs, new wine in old bottles, straw men, reinventing the wheel. In favor of putting money where mouth is

Alone but not Lonely! New study finds "people with negative beliefs about being alone experience a steep increase in loneliness after spending time alone in daily life, whereas those with positive beliefs feel less lonely after spending time alone." Open Access: doi.org/10.1038/s414...
Abstract
Loneliness is a widespread issue routinely targeted by the media and public health campaigns. We propose that these efforts, though well-intentioned, may exacerbate this problem by negatively influencing a potential driver of loneliness: people’s beliefs about being alone. Supporting this thesis, we show that contemporary U.S. news articles are 10 times more likely to describe being alone as harmful than beneficial (Study 1, N = 144 articles) and that exposure to such articles causally impacts people’s beliefs about being alone (Study 2, N = 456). Further, a 2-week experience-sampling study (Study 3, N = 161) demonstrates that people with negative beliefs about being alone experience a steep increase in loneliness after spending time alone in daily life, whereas those with positive beliefs feel less lonely after spending time alone. Finally, multi-national studies demonstrate the generalizability of these results across nine countries spanning six continents (Studies 4 and 5, N = 2930). Together, these findings reveal the critical role of beliefs about being alone in shaping loneliness.

NEW ARTICLE: In this short piece, Jack Andrews and I argue that, based on the evidence we now have, the field should move away from universal school-based mental health interventions and focus on more effective alternatives acamh.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... summary thread below:
Abstract
There is an urgent need to improve mental health outcomes among young people. One approach taken to address this problem has been the design and delivery of universal school-based prevention, based on therapeutic models such as CBT and mindfulness. Such interventions are delivered to groups of young people, irrespective of risk or need. However, in this commentary, we argue that the initial appeal of universal interventions has not been supported by the evidence: universal school-based prevention is less effective than targeted approaches, often leads to null or unsustained positive effects, has the potential to elicit negative effects and is not well liked by young people themselves. In addition, many young people in each classroom already meet the criteria for a mental disorder, meaning that prevention approaches may not be appropriate or effective for this group. In this commentary, we respond to Birrell et al.'s (2025) paper by arguing that the field should move away from universal prevention and instead invest our limited resources in the refinement and dissemination of interventions with a stronger evidence base, such as one-to-one, targeted and indirect approaches.

I know it seems like a weird principle but once you accept that the correlation between "what people believe" and "what is real" is close to zero, the world makes a lot more sense and it's a lot easier to understand modern politics, which are driven by free-floating media and social media zeitgeists

I think 2024 is a good case in point that you don't need actual bad economic circumstances to trigger this near iron law of politics. Bad economic sentiment is what you need. It's just that normally you need the circumstance to drive sentiment. But in this brave new world of ours, not necessarily.

The smug liberal consensus on how politics works is incredibly, incredibly wrong, and all the wrongness is rooted in the same place: a refusal to acknowledge that politics flows out of the social and psychological more than the material and economic, and is therefore not a solvable game
