The aftershock zone of today’s M8.8 Kamchatka megathrust #earthquake is comparable to the rupture area of the 1952 rupture zone from Macinnes et al. (2010). At a rate of 8 cm/year, the accumulated slip of 6 m since 1952 matches with the preliminary rupture model of today’s earthquake pretty well. 🧪⚒️

You have to watch it multiple times, to see everything that is going on. Look to 1) co-seismic displacement right of the fence, the ground will move towards your right, indicating that it is a right-lateral displacement. (continues and feel free to add anything more if you see it)

Apparently surface rupture during the Myanmar 2025. I'm very surprised by the weak shaking along the rupture. I'm not sure if this is the main rupture (I would say no - nonetheless, VERY COOL). Author unknown, location Thazi (to be confirmed)

The whole #MyanmarEarthquake rupture in one interferogram! This is three consecutive wide swath frames of ALOS-2 data, provided by JAXA through agreement with NASA. The line-of-sight (LOS) is ~perpendicular to fault strike, so most of what you see is vertical motion at bends and steps of the fault.
A radar interferogram covering 17.5 to 23.5 degrees north, in Myanmar. Tightly clustered fringes delimit the likely 2025 earthquake rupture zone.

Given that 2025 Myanmar earthquake likely ruptured at supershear speed for considerable distance, I tried Vallée & Dunham (2012)'s method to identify potential Mach cone. I selected the M 5.1 aftershock whose USGS moment tensor is similar to that of the mainshock.

This matches very well with traces of the surface rupture visible a few km to the north on the high resolution Planet SkySat images (thank you Planet!). The offset road is the northernmost point on the overview, and I measured about 4.5 m of offset there.
Satellite image of part of the area affected by the Myanmar earthquake. The lower left of the image has large and small buildings. The lower right corner shows a river. A linear ridge goes up the middle. To the left of the ridge are a series of blue dots more or less n a line.Closeup of satellite image. A white road goes across the middle, with trees below and a field above. The road is cut and offset by about the road width.

Also fits with these images that I found on twitter, from Heung Min Son (@heungburma) and approximately located in Sagaing.
looking down a highway with a huge crack running across it. The road lines are displaced across the crack. A man is trying to bring a motorbike across. Looking down a road and sidewalk that are broken and bent. To the right of the road is a lot of broken concrete, then a grassy slope down to a river. looking down an urban street in Sagaing. The street has a median divider that is offset in two places. One both sides of the street are damaged or destroyed buildings. There are motorbikes, a car, and a red truck (fire/rescue truck?) driving on the road. Google Earth image of Sagaing, with three yellow pins labeled approx_rupture

Regarding the Mw 7.7 Myanmar earthquake: to be confirmed, but it seems the segment that ruptured was at least partially a "seismic gap". The 1st image is figure 1 from Xiong et al 2017 doi.org/10.1002/2017... and the 2nd image is from Hurukawa & Maung 2011 doi.org/10.1029/2010...

There are two very cool things (to me) about this paper. The first is just the technique (full-waveform inversion) the other is finding remnants of tectonic plates from 100+ Myrs ago in the mantle. 🧪⚒️ www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Workflow for the correlation of positive wave speed anomalies with reconstructed subduction zones. Top panels (a,b) show continents and plate boundaries in the S2012 and C2020 reconstructions at 120 Ma plotted over the VS wave speed anomaly in REVEAL at 1800 km depth. Middle panels (c,d) show wave speed anomaly at 1800 km sampled at reconstructed subduction zones for both reconstructions. Panels (e,f) show the distribution of sampled wave speed anomaly weighted by the length of each subduction zone segment for both reconstructions.

Even when you know how magnitudes work and so how big a M9 earthquake would be, it's still hard to fully fathom an event like 1700 Cascadia. The rupture area is just SO huge.
ShakeMap of a scenario M9.0 earthquake on the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The "extreme" shaking intensity goes from northern California all the way up through Vancouver Island, decreasing in intensity inland, but it's still at "strong" shaking intensity 300 km inland from the coast. A key at the bottom shows the intensity scale key from "not felt" up to "extreme"
