Listening to a man at the farmers market explain he’s out of eggs as “the ladies aren’t producing due to heat stress”— and another poultry vendor says he’s out, as he can’t keep them in this heat. Climate change is all around. We just have to open our eyes to see how it’s affecting our daily lives.

Terence Tao, who is otherwise quite bullish on AI, had this to say:
Terence Tao writes on mastodon:

Fundamentally, problems in pure mathematics, such as the global regularity problem, serve a different purpose than immediately practical problems, such as that of finding a cure to a specific disease, or increasing the energy efficiency of some engine. In most cases in pure mathematics, the problems are posed not because we desperately want the solution to these problems in and of themselves, but because we have seen from past experience that human-directed efforts to solve these problems tend to spur further development of the field through the efforts to solve such problems, and then to digest any partial or complete solutions that emerge for further insights. Prematurely solving the problem by purely AI-powered methods - particularly without full transparency into the solution process - can contaminate this process to the point where it actually becomes a net negative for the progress of mathematics as a whole. A fascinating topic. It often takes more than simple infiltration to explain measured pore pressures in potentially unstable slopes, incl bedrock contributions over time scales longer than rapid infiltration. The tricky part: understanding the role of each component in each slope in each storm.

Likewise for people (or pets) and wild rodents here in New Mexico. Beyond bats, we have a couple of human cases of plague each year. A woman died of it in June. There's also hantavirus from breathing dust contaminated by infected rodents (e.g., Gene Hackman's wife). Be cautious and seek prompt care!

And in disciplines like mine—geology—that means doing fieldwork, making measurements, collecting samples for lab work, photographing and sketching. AI can't do that. Yet, many geo departments are scaling back field training requirements for a range of reasons (cost, liability, "the future is AI"). ⚒️
