Using open-source WISP (Goldberg et al., 2026) code and with help from Claude Opus 4.8, I did very preliminary finite fault inversion of 2026 Venezuela earthquake. Producing reasonably looking result took several iterations, but with very little effort of data-fetching.

The Imperial Valley has seen dozens if not hundreds of these sort of swarms over the century we have recorded. A swarm is a group of quakes (dozens to thousands) where there are many quakes close in size and no obvious mainshock. Often the size will grow like we've seen here going from M3s to M4s.

So 2 areas with swarms ongoing in Southern California. A classic Brawley seismic zone swarm today in the Imperial Valley fault. Largest so far is M4.1. These continue until they stop so we will likely see more M3s tonight and may get bigger.

A swarm sequence has been confirmed near #Brawley, CA, #SouthernCalifornia #Earthquake. This is a typical sequence for the area, with with 81 events catalogued so far, including a M4.4 at 7:22 PDT. You can read more about it here: www.scsn.org/index.php/20...

Seismic swarm happening southwest of Brawley. This area is notoriously swarmy, and had significant swarms in 2012 and 2020. 82 detected events so far, including a M4.4. More earthquakes are likely and may be felt be folks nearby.

Our team studied the Mw 4.2 earthquake in South Korea last year and the work has just been published in SRL. I was fortunate to lead the research as the first author, mainly contributing on the source time function analysis using Empirical Green's Function approach.

⚒️ 🧪 If you've seen breathless reporting about a seismic swarm near a "supervolcano" in northern Nevada, don't worry: that is just where Yellowstone was, 15 million years ago. There is no supervolcano there now. But the swarm, and the geology here, is pretty neat! Read about it in our latest post:

⚒️ 🧪 A M7.3 earthquake struck offshore Alaska yesterday. This is the sixth earthquake above M7 in this small stretch of the subduction zone since 2020. This was a weird strike-slip earthquake, reminiscent of a similar quake in 2020. Did these ruptures happen in the slab, the upper plate - or both?
