🚨I am very honored to announce that I’m starting as a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow at the University of Lisbon, funded by the European Commission 🚨. I am grateful to NCSU where I honed my skills in Quaternary Geochronology and all my USA colleagues who I work with in Earthquake Geology. ☺️🌍

Apparently surface rupture during the Myanmar 2025. I'm very surprised by the weak shaking along the rupture. I'm not sure if this is the main rupture (I would say no - nonetheless, VERY COOL). Author unknown, location Thazi (to be confirmed)

A small correction, the Sparta earthquake was not in the southern Appalachian zone, was just south of the Giles Seismic Zone (south Virginia) see image from Neves et al., 2024

Not attending #EGU25 but I'm a co-author in a few abstracts. I highlight this poster presented by PhD candidate Dennis Wolf. Check it out Friday, 2 May in the morning Hall X2 | X2.52. He is doing a great work! (Next year, I will be at EGU, I promise!)

Another video from the Myanmar Mw 7.7 quake. Now we see the railway tracks (Pyinmana, Myanmar) bent and severely deformed.

Absolutely amazing video. Direct displacement of a drainage/channel: it is possible to see a right lateral displacement of the thalweg of about 1.5 to 2 m. It is also possible to see the fault plane exposed! Credit: okarun011 on TikTok

Regarding the Mw 7.7 Myanmar earthquake: to be confirmed, but it seems the segment that ruptured was at least partially a "seismic gap". The 1st image is figure 1 from Xiong et al 2017 doi.org/10.1002/2017... and the 2nd image is from Hurukawa & Maung 2011 doi.org/10.1029/2010...

In my case, it should be: “how is this quartz-rich??? There is cleavage!!! How do they expect me to extract 10Be from this piece of &$&@?!?” And then thinking about hitting them saying “sampling MATTERS! Learn your f$& mineralogy and petrology!” There! Stop complaining about geochronology!

This is the question I get the most during this season "How is Thanksgiving celebrated in your country?" We don't!! Inherited from pagan celebrations, Europeans celebrate the Harvest season, at the end of the harvest season, in late September. That's what we are thankful for.

well, it has been some months that I have not been here. Have not been much on social media. I think I am leaving the other place for good. If you know me, or if you are into earthquakes, paleoseismology, active tectonics, Q Geology, just say something. Trying to find familiar faces 👍

Targeting 10Be samples to be measured in a AMS… the final step of a long process that starts when you collect a sample in the field. Now you have the BeO2, and need to measure it to estimate your date.

Not attending AGU but I do have a poster there presented by co-author/mentor Tom Pratt. These are preliminary results from using Precariously Balanced Rocks analysis to estimate past ground motions in the greater New York area applied to seismic hazards. Curious? Check out Poster # S431-043

Yesterday was the anniversary of the Mw 7.3 Pleasant Valley, the largest normal faulting earthquake in the USA. We dug this fault at multiple locations, found multiple earthquakes, and we are dating also the alluvial fans that are displaced. Results should come out within the next year.

New paper, I have a very minor role on it, but very thankful for the opportunity. Vadman et al identified and mapped a portion of a 1-2 ka old paleo- multi fault rupture between Landers and Hector Mine, rupturing partially along Calico and likely a Mw 7.4. pubs.geoscienceworld.org/gsa/geospher...

For sure the causative structure is related to Atlas, however, the preliminary focal mechanism suggests a N122 trending structure, an oblique structure to the main Atlas front. Looking at the satellite imagery, there is a subtle but visible lineament. Cannot find literature on this.

Mw 6.8 in Morocco, reverse, epicenter NE to the Mw 5.9 1960 Agadir location, and away from main cities. This EQ was strong, shallow-ish, and potentially hazardous. My heart is with the Morocco people. Was large enough to be felt in Lisbon, Portugal and southern Spain. Insha'Allah, all will be well.

3 years ago, 4 days after the earthquake, the 1st evidence associating tectonic faulting to the Mw 5.1 surface rupture and beautiful and small scarp. No mowing yet and little we knew then about the Little River fault at Sparta, NC.

Introducing myself in the Blue Sky - I'm Paula, I'm a geologist who loves earthquakes and digging them up. I'm a researcher in Active Tectonics, and I like studying earthquakes, and deformed landscapes, especially if they have marine terraces (old surfer habits never die). Portuguese native!
