This study took many years, several grants (and grant rejections) and a LOT of processing of pelvic scans. Most of it achieved by @paleonicole.bsky.social! But it was proper team work, and what a team! I wish more of us were on Bluesky, but check out the paper for the full list (8/8)

The study results of @paleonicole.bsky.social & @liabetti.bsky.social et al, in turn, provide a sophisticated evolutionary context for understanding the diversity of primate birth strategies and the comparative context in which human birth problems arose. @nature.com 1/2

@paleonicole.bsky.social and I have written a short piece on why a tight fit at birth is not unique to humans. Some other primates have it much worse, but seem to have adapted to their obstetrical dilemma in different ways.

Why some primates have even tougher births than humans
Tamarins and squirrel monkeys have babies with unspeakably large heads compared to their mother’s birth canal.

Very, very happy that our paper is finally out! We look at how tight a fit primates experience at birth, and found really cool results. It has been a long journey from collecting the first data seven years ago! A brief thread (1/8) www.nature.com/articles/s41...

New #OpenAccess article alert! @paleonicole.bsky.social led this first description of a partial right #Neandertal hipbone from El Sidrón, Spain that expands the range of morphological variation in Neandertals. Read it here: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... #Paleoanthropology #TeamPelvis
Manuscript Figure 2: Photographs of the SD-1663 right partial os coxae in different views. A) lateral, B) medial, C) anterolateral focused on the acetabulum, and D) Zoomed in view of the eroded acetabular margin that is also crushed superomedially. The fossil preserves most of the acetabulum, part of the superior pubic ramus, part of the ischial body, and part of the iliac blade. The greater sciatic notch is fully preserved and is a narrow, J-shape.

A partial skeleton was unearthed in 1961 during excavations led by Hisashi Suzuki at Amud Cave, Israel. This individual lived sometime between 65,000 and 50,000 years ago. Anthropologists have classified the skeleton as a Neandertal.
Illustration of Amud 1 cranium. Text: This partial skeleton was unearthed in 1961 during excavations led by Hisashi Suzuki. This individual lived sometime between 65,000 and 50,000 years ago. Anthropologists have often classified the skeleton as a Neandertal, and it does share many features of its skull and mandible with European Neandertals. But other traits of its skull and postcranial skeleton resemble modern people, suggesting that the story is not so simple. Today it seems likely that this person belonged to a population with ancestry from multiple Pleistocene groups.
