one cool thing about reading old records is when you glimpse a very human moment across centuries. these three sisters all got married within weeks of each other in 1818- not super weird, but unusual enough it caught my attention. i wondered if there was a reason.
three records of the brides of a series of marriages. They are Barbara, Theresia, and Anna Maria, the daughters of Georg Weninger and Elisabeth, neé Robl (or Roblin, with the customary feminine marker used in the area on the surname)

People who travel far for field research (archaeologists, biologists, any of y'all): what do you make sure you bring with you from home? For me, medication, obvs, but I bring my Aeropress so I can have coffee how I like it

I hope the Hugo Awards continues to have a 'judge's packet' of review materis like they did this year- most of the novels, novelletes, novellas, short stories, etc, all in one place upon registration. I can see 2,492 ballots cast this year with this system, compared to 1,338 from last year.

Copper alloy button taken in for recording by my Finds Liaison Officer (FLO) last week on the Portable Antiquities Scheme, part of the T&Cs of having a mudlarking permit. Usually items have to be over 300yrs old to be recorded, but this button is rare & has an important London transport story 1/
Copper alloy livery button from the WLER - West London Extension Railway found on the Thames Foreshore. A close-up of a copper alloy uniform button with the initials WLER on it. It once belonged to a porter or railway worker who was employed by this line. The back of the copper alloy WLER uniform button seen posed in my hand on the Thames Foreshore. The shank is still visible though flattened with age.

If you or I had installed a water connection without the utility company's knowledge that was not linked to our account, we all know they wouldn't be saying that we have to be partners. Link to article: arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...
An investigation conducted by utility officials in Georgia’s Fayette County found that the Quality Technology Services (QTD) facility had two industrial-scale water hookups that weren’t being monitored. “One water connection had been installed without the utility’s knowledge, and the other was not linked to the company’s account and therefore wasn’t being billed,” Politico reported.

QTS eventually paid about $150,000 for the water, but there were no consequences for exceeding peak limits established by the county during the data center planning process. Frustrating residents, the county declined to fine QTS. Fayette County’s water system director, Vanessa Tigert, told Politico that the decision was partly because the county blamed itself and didn’t want to offend QTS.

“They’re our largest customer, and we have to be partners,” Tigert said. “It’s called customer service.”
