"Pricing El Niño is not the same as preventing its loss of life. Yet, many of those acting on its forecasts are using them to move money, not people, out of harm’s way." My editorial for Science on why hedging El Niño is not the same as adapting to it: www.science.org/eprint/DU6FR...

Hedging El Niño isn’t the same as adapting to it
Record-setting warm waters slosh eastward across the tropical Pacific, forming El Niño. This recurrent climate pattern reconfigures severe weather worldwide, and with it, the global economy. Scientist...

I have a new piece out in Nature today on the record-breaking 2026/2027 El Niño, what impacts we should expect, and how governments can prepare. The Niño3.4 region is currently running more than 1C hotter than any prior event on record, and we remain months away from the peak www.nature.com/artic...

Some folks are holding up the unusually quiet Atlantic hurricane season as some sort of "gotcha" for climate scientists. But low Atlantic hurricane activity has long been the signature of strong El Nino events, as memorably shown back in 1997:

A few weekends ago I went to Miami and attended 9 open houses in extremely high-risk flood areas to see what agents are telling prospective buyers about them. Here is my journey

A 1,000-year atmospheric methane record has been recovered from tropical ice in Peru. Why it matters: Most long-term CH₄ records come from polar ice. This first tropical record will help reveal how CH₄ sources have changed...and separate natural from human emissions. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Peruvian ice has preserved a global methane record
An ice core from a tropical mountain shows that the equatorial input to methane levels was greater than previously thought.

According Dr. Robert Atlas, the elimination of NOAA's AOML as proposed in their 2026 budget would result in a 20-40% decrease in hurricane forecast accuracy, costing the economy an estimated $10 billion each hurricane season. Sobering numbers on what's at stake.

Writing is a lot like weight training. You won't be able to lift a lot at first. You start small. Short session, light weights. Day by day though you get just a *little* stronger. Eventually your sessions get longer, the bars get heavier, and everyone says "I could never do that." Just like you did.
