Cover of Science magazine for July 30, 2026. Caption from Science reads: A three-dimensional rendering shows the land bridge connection between North and South America. Research on the fossil record of mammals in Mexico suggests that the geographic region acted as a biodiversity “holding pen” for 10 million years, buffering the pace of both northward and southward movements of mammal species leading up to the Great American Biotic Interchange.

Enjoyed visiting both the Carnegie Museum of Art & Natural History Museums in Pittsburgh PA yesterday, both world-class institutions. An ichnological highlight for me? Seeing what I think is still the largest known eurypterid trackway, made by a 2.3 meters (7.5 feet) long eurypterid: oh my. 🧪🪨🌊🦂🐾
Gray sandstone surface seen at an angle so its width seems to decrease in the distance, but actually stays the same; on this surface are sets of three linear and parallel impressions on both left and right sides, making a "V" pattern.Gray sandstone surface with two sets of three linear and parallel impressions on both left and right sides, making a "V" pattern, my hand to the lower left as scale, showing the set of three there is about three times wider than my hand.Sign for the display in previous two photos, with an illustration of a eurypterid on the left making a trackway of three sets of tracks on right and left sides; the eurypterid has a long segmented main body and a short head with two eyes, and on each side are three walking legs and a paddle-like leg. The top part of the text says "A Giant Sea Scorpion Trackway from Western Pennsylvania," then "Palmichnium koniskiorum, CM 34388 (Holotype), Briggs, & Rolfe, 1983," followed by a lot more text that I didn't feel like typing (sorry).
