I’m retroactively proud that one of my favorite stanzas in the Editorial Trochee Sequence includes, arguably, two Orson Welles shoutouts in a row, since Maurice Lamarche’s Brain was a heavily Welles-inflected performance

Huh? What? But EVERYBODY KNOWS Tom never finished enough pages to make a full issue of Duckborne Chronicles! How? Did he draw many many new pages not yet available online that will be on sale IN PRINT the way it was meant to be? THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE www.smallpressexpo.com/debut/duckbo...
drawing of a cover of a comic called Duckborne Chronicles with a digitally painted cover of a duckman with a sword fighting off a bunch of ratmen with knivesPublished by Your McHenries

Adults Only

Category: Fantasy

The Duckborne Chronicles have long been considered by scholars one of the most readable and exciting founding legends of the Duckmanlands. Thousands of years ago, when the great Ducklords still ruled, Lord Letrigan led a band of mighty duckman thanes in a first attempt to colonize to the uncharted Verminous Lands. The doomed expedition encountered strange beasts and stranger ideas that would change their society forever.

In this first issue of weird sword and sorcery action, with the death of one of his best warriors and against a larger advancing hover cavalry of ratmen, Letrigan must forge a new path forward to survive, all while undermined by treacherous allies within.

A well carved keyaki burr wood tea tray in the form of a Japanese maple leaf. The timber chosen for its eccentric gnarled grain, with a deep rich patina. Japan, 19th century.
Carved during the 19th century from a prized burl section of Japanese zelkova (keyaki), this exquisite tea tray (chabon) embodies the literati (bunjin) aesthetic that flourished within late Edo and Meiji-period steeped tea (senchadō) culture. Rather than forcing rigid geometric symmetry onto the timber, the artisan worked in intimate dialogue with the natural eccentricities of the wood (kobu-moku), allowing its gnarled, swirling figure and natural inclusions to dictate the organic contours of a drying, fallen Japanese maple leaf (momiji). The shallow concave vessel is delicately dished to hold tea utensils, enlivened by incised leaf veins (myaku) that branch gracefully across the dense, wavy grain, while the undulating, scalloped rim curls upward to mimic the gentle warping of autumnal foliage.

Over a century of ritual care, oil rubbing, and tea service, the keyaki timber has developed a rich, honeyed chestnut patina that catches the light across its sculptural contours. Highly prized in Japanese woodworking for its strength, vibrant grain patterns, and stability, keyaki burl was especially revered among scholar-aesthetes who sought to bring the wild, untamed essence of mountain landscapes into the quiet sanctuary of the tearoom. Rooted in the visual philosophy of wabi-sabi—the profound appreciation for asymmetry, natural flaw, and impermanence—this tray serves as both a functional platform for a teapot (kyūsu) and a tactile work of sculptural craft, celebrating the quiet elegance found within nature's rustic forms.

An item I forgot to put on the list at the end: The way the game so elegantly illustrates the concept of trade-offs in design. Compact solutions take more cycles to finish, fast solutions require more parts, and prioritizing one aspect almost always means compromising something else.
