My face when even the commentary subtitles don't use the term "postcard memories". (They would be right not to, since Dezaki doesn't refer to a postcard in his description) FWIW none of the Black Jack commentary tracks conducted on the JP side (Ep 1, 6, and Movie) touch upon the subject either.

Today is a 1965 day. Gulliver no Uchuu Ryokou (Gulliver's Travels Beyond the Moon) There's a lot of neat things design-wise, but the movie as a whole kinda fell flat for me. Maybe another case of too much musical. Going to take a break from early Toei Dōga feature films for a bit.

Today is a 1963 day. Wan Wan Chuushingura (Doggie March) This is good. I'm not one for the animal antics normally, but despite being all about the animals, I thought it was great. The camerawork and directing is a lot better than previous entries.

Today is a 1962 day. Arabian Nights: Sindbad no Bouken (Sinbad's Adventures) Compared to the previous film, I actually thought it was good overall. Maybe because the presence of the animals feels just ever so slightly lessened? Haha No, I think some of the camera positioning is better too.

Today is a 1961 day. Anju to Zushiou Maru (The Littlest Warrior) Thought about it for a while, but I think think one of the reasons the early Toei Doga films are kinda boring to me is the camerawork & perspective. There were one or two shots slightly more interesting in this regard though.

Today is a 1959 day. Shounen Sarutobi Sasuke (Magic Boy) Well, I guess I enjoyed it more than Hakujaden (Panda and the Magic Serpent)... I like the 3D-ish look of the credits. I don't have any desire to ever rewatch this besides maybe the climax at the end, which has some nice effects animation.

For those who don't know: Osamu Dezaki's "postcard memories" is called "harmony" (ハーモニー) in Japanese. You would be forgiven for thinking it seems ironic given that it often emphasizes heightened moments of tension. However, it refers to the harmonization of the cel layer and the background. (1/3)

Decided to try out the PS1 Escaflowne game. Cleared it in under 3.5 hours. Waste of time. Watching a play through on YouTube or something would've been pretty much the same experience.

I was reading an interview on Osamu Dezaki (Black Jack OVAs, Ashita no Joe, Ace wo Nerae). This is even more relevant that it was at the time, unfortunately.

⸺ Earlier you said you have a strong tendency to depict adult society within works for children. Tomorrow’s Joe depicts the progression of the fights between boxers, the people who live in the slums, and those in the juvenile reform facility. At times, these depictions are extreme. Did you find it difficult to adapt this work into anime, for broadcast during the family dinner time slot?

Dezaki: No, I think it was pretty standard. On the contrary, I think society today is strange and reckless when it comes to taboo. It doesn’t make sense that you can’t show blood because it’s during a time slot when people are eating. I did have trouble doing some work for NHK because there were a lot of lines in the script containing disallowed words. The whole “don’t show blood during mealtime” way of TV productions is just code for overseas markets; this is an excuse based on business considerations. It’s absurd. Well, there are good aspects to not showing blood. However, these people inhabit a remarkable world, and to portray this, there are times when showing blood is necessary.
