That is horrific and is probably happening to some non-trivial number of PhD students everyday. It's not supposed to be like that: You're supposed to ask your supervisor a question and then he spends the next hour going off on a tangent about some work he hasn't touched in 7 years.

I think because once you manage to get into your 3rd year of transition survivor bias means you are much less likely to be in a unsafe situation where your DID needs to be working really well. So you can't see it. But getting this far means statistically it's safe for it to show up.

Memoirs of a trespasser. I loved this, at least for first few hours. Oak and I believe myrrh. A gorgeous woody warm smell. 5 hours later and it is sawdust. Which is less nice, but very interesting. So much convexity gone. Still very nice, but disappointing by comparison.

Melbourne and Perth have moved further apart. I begrudge the decreased overlap with my coworkers in Melbourne. And more so, since most of my close friends are in Melbourne I begrudge the loss of time with them too.
