Yes, I was thinking of community land buyouts, eg of an estate, with an explicit “commons” agenda. And framing the commons aspect as part of a socio-ecological restoration/regeneration.

@discoursegraphs.bsky.social looks like a really interesting concept. Can you point me to an absolute beginner’s guide? I’ve checked out the site and it seems to assume a level of existing knowledge that I don’t have!

Indeed, though I was actually thinking about re-commoning alongside restoring grassland in rural nature reserves etc.

And if one's thinking about the role of the Enclosures, worth thinking about the role of people and of the Commons in the Nature Recovery Strategy? That wetland and moorland was most likely communally managed and used in some way.

This is an interesting point that has come up in our Local Nature Recovery Strategy: If you start post Enclosure (circa 1600-1650 in Tees Valley) then your story now is loss of hedgerows. Start before & the loss is of wetlands and massive amounts of grassland/grazing moor; hedges are irrelevant.

Uncomfortable with English and British labels (everything I didn’t like was getting worse), but felt arrogant to say I was Scottish. But in the campaign I felt welcomed - and now proud to be a New Scot.

Good to see the pavement mentioned! None of the signs for Holyrood Parks’ regular weekend road closures say what the roads are closed to! I’d love to see new signs here that make it clear when roads are safe for walkers and cyclists (and dogs) because closed to motor vehicles.

Agreed! Driven in part probably by perceived demand for big macho cars fuelled by movies etc. And partly due to safety standards requiring bigger crush areas. Just look at how flimsy old cars are! Point is, it’s not war. It’s messy and complex. I’m not sure calling it war helps solve it.

I used to live at the other end of these isles in a small community with a famous lifeboat station. The lifeboatmen and women were seemingly ordinary farmers, fishermen, plumbers etc. No hero image. When the beeper goes, they drive to the station and launched the boat.

It’s more that a whole series of choices at planning level, without enough thought to long term consequences to how they would change the whole system. And then in a society where blaming individuals and government has become the default, it’s now ”war”. Alternatives? I’m not sure! Ideas?

Osbert Lancaster @osbert.org · 20/09/2026
At one level I love this. But is it accepting opponents‘ framing? Which we’re told is a mistake. Is there really a “war” on either cars or walking? I don’t think so.

This. To think otherwise is to condone wage theft & exploitation. No, the money doesn't need to come out of your also-tiny paycheque. The billionaire class spent decades robbing people, the planet, and infrastructure, buying politicians to order to re-write laws to normalize abuses like this.

I remember being at that lecture; don’t recall the details. What sticks in my mind is a positive vision of how Princes St could be so much better. Obv, to happen any vision has to be workable, legally, technically, economically. We could do with some vision the city can get behind.
