The starts of eruptive crises are chaotic & those in charge of protecting people don't need tourists taking resources from locals. 🧪 ⚒️ A M5.8 earthquake occurred a few hours ago southeast of Mexico City. Not much damage, but interesting tectonics: the subducting slab is flat to the SW and bends down steeply to the NE. That bending seems to be capable of causing large, sometimes damaging earthquakes. Read more on our blog!

This is probably my all-time favourite album art. I love the album itself too and the band is one of my favourites, they mean everything to me, but I just absolutely LOVE the album cover. It's just so pretty and well-designed. I'm somewhat planning on getting part of it as a tattoo at some point.

The Indonesian island of Java has many volcanoes and a long history with them. The reason for its extremely high population (almost 152 million) is because of the fertile volcanic soil. The word "lahar", which refers to a type of volcanic mudflow, originates from the Javanese language.

The world's highest-elevation active volcano, Ojos del Salado, has two primary peaks. One is called the Chilean peak and the other the Argentine peak, though both peaks are actually on the international border—the Chilean one is simply more easily accessed from Chile and otherwise for the Argentine.

Mount Wrangell in Alaska is the largest American volcano by volume outside of Hawaii. A major active shield volcano, it has two names in the local Ahtna language: K’ełt’aeni when not erupting ("the one that controls the weather") and Uk'ełedi when erupting ("the one with smoke on it").

A period that some historians refer to as possibly the worst time to be alive, the decades following 536 CE (particularly 536 itself), was caused by a volcanic winter generated by a series of major eruptions around the world. Only one of the initial responsible volcanoes is known (Mono Craters).
