Global model ensembles are in strong agreement that a prolonged &anomalous nearly West-wide autumn heatwave will develop this week & persist for 10+ days. While some daytime records may be set, this event will be more notable for its persistence & breadth. [Thread]
Map showing predicted temperature anomalies in early October from the ECMWF ensemble across the western U.S. Nearly the entire region is painted red and pink, indicating widespread very warm anomalies.

This paper suggest how the towers collapsed (one got straight down, the other fell sideways) dispersed the energy different - as most potential energy went into the deformation & disintegration & only a small percentage into the seismic event cvt.engin.umich.edu/wp-content/u...

I know this is aside from the point, but I'm wondering why the two collapses had different magnitudes, since they were identical structures on the same site.

Lots of wins for Norway this summer!
A venn diagram. The outer circle says "Countries I have been to." There are two more circles inside, one that says "Countries where I've pet a cat" and one that says "Countries where I've pet a dog."

I have been to, but not pet animals in: Finland, Austria, UK, Czechia, Hungary, Ireland
I have pet a cat but not a dog in: Slovakia, Denmark, Indonesia, and Italy
I have pet a dog but not a cat in: New Zealand, Sweden, Germany, and Canada
I have pet both a cat and a dog in: USA, Iceland, Norway, Japan, and Mexico

The change from last time is that Norway was previously in the "pet a dog but not a cat" category.

Some angles just really drive home how Mammoth is a volcano.
A photo of a mountainous landscape. In the lower part of the frame, steep tree covered slopes with some outcrops of gray rock come together at a narrow valley in the center. In the upper part of the frame, above the valley, a gray wedge-shaped mountain sticks up well above the treeline. Its slopes are steep and smooth; its most recent coating of ash erupted out 700ish years ago. If you want to ski on a volcano, this is your spot.
