I think one reason it’s good to have a liberal arts education in the classic sense is that you don’t then spend time trying to invent the concept of “intellectual pursuits” from first principles

I don’t really know when it happened exactly but Republicans have turned just basic kindness upside down. We all know what kindness is and we all know what a jerk looks like. At some point, Republicans decided being a huge asshole was preferred and kindness was bad.

I’m delighted that Albanians are protesting this corrupt deal, and I agree that U.S. media should be covering this. What I reject is the pathological obsession with linking anything bad and “Zionism”. Or is it because Kushner is Jewish? Because that doesn‘t make it any better at all.

Just a reminder: Tillis persuaded the woman Hegseth allegedly raped to come forward with her story, and told her that if she did, it would sink the nomination. She did. At great risk to herself. Tillis then cast the deciding vote for Hegseth. Because he’s a goddamned coward.

With Orban going down and MAGA appearing to be collapsing in on itself, things were looking up for democracy. AfD winning in Saxony-Anhalt was a setback, but it’s just one German state. Brazil heading for a Bolsonaro restoration really stings. Shows that this global struggle will go for a while.

You'd think, but I'm sure SCOTUS will explain that the lack of "herein" in Article II means that Trump enjoys the prerogatives of the Stewart Kings of England, and thus such a ban directly impinges on the equal dignitude of the Executive Branch... or something.

The irony of course is that Originalism’s big selling point was supposed to be constraining the discretion or judges to impose their own political preferences as law. In practice the effect has been very much the reverse: Liberating justices from the constraints of stare decisis.

The problem with this entire “talking across difference” approach to politics is that it assumes a shared consensus about democracy that no longer exists b/w the 2 main 🇺🇸 political parties. You don’t need to have lunch with people who don’t believe in free elections, equal rights, & the rule of law.

. @jonathanbchait.bsky.social on Christopher Rufo. Quite good. Might not be what you expect. Here's an excerpt. The ending comes back to this in an amazing way, but I don't want to stop on his punchline. alt link: archive.is/nndtD, h/t @tomscocca.bsky.social www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
Recently, however, Rufo has backed away from his previously forthright defense of meritocracy, and by all available evidence, he has done so because the principle turns out to contain a fatal flaw: Many of the Americans who benefit from meritocracy have brown skin. More to the point, a lot of Republicans resent those brown-skinned Americans. Given the right’s commitment to anti-intellectualism and populist resentment, and President Trump’s open embrace of job promotions based on loyalty or appearance (“central casting”) rather than qualifications, Rufo’s turn against race-blind merit might have been inevitable. Or perhaps his abandonment of the merit principle reveals a great deal about the motives that have driven him all along.
